View Full Version : Has anyone tried Mint.com?
Has anyone tried mint.com? Clark Howard uses it and recommends it to organize investments, checking, savings, etc. and have it all in one spot. It even makes categories for tracking. It's supposed to be secure and you don't move money around, just track it? Anybody tried it?

I use it and I really like it. There is alot more to it than I am currently using, but I do plan to delve in deeper. The budgeting part that it does is really useful and completely customizable. Tracking your net worth is great too.
You are correct - you don't actually move money or perform any transactions in Mint. It is just useful to see spending trends, savings, there are some cool graphs and charts. The only thing I find somewhat annoying is the email alerts - xxx account has a low balance, large deposit to xxx account, overspending in xxx category, etc. But you can choose what you want to be emailed about, so that's easily fixed.
I like it for getting accurate numbers on my accounts. I like it for being able to view transactions and tag them. I don't like their budgeting that much, and I wish they had a better "cash wallet" capability. So I use both Mint and YNAB and between the two of them, I get good info.
I switched from Quicken to Mint.com about a year ago, and find it a good replacement.
I just started using it. One great feature helps since my computer is totally falling apart. I use my work laptop for everything and my new phone and sometimes my old laptop. So I don't need to make a choice and install it on one computer, on my work lap top which would be innapropriate. I can use all the Quicken type features with access while I save up to replace my computer.
Yup. It sends too many alerts, which I could probably change. We've not found it thatuseful, so are ditching it.
I agree with Redfox. I also found the categorization problematic. For example, take a trip to Target: is it a gift? Clothes? Cold medicine? A dog bed? All those are different categories, so I found I still had to manually track but having it automated meant that I mentally felt like it already tracked which led to laziness.

I use mint but not to do my tracking. It became especially problematic with retailers that are often in different categories. For example, Amazon.com purchases...it will put it in the last category you used, and I buy all kinds of stuff from Amazon. So, I just do my own tracking and use it as an app on my phone as a quick glance at the numbers.
