This may sound crazy but I think Google+ will overtake Facebook in user population in the next few years. Google has the advantage of many other outside applications; a suite of document programs and a growing hardware base. Google's available connectivity blows Facebook away. Initially, Google+ isn't really intuitive but, with enough practice, it is easy to see some really fun and amazing functionality.

Problem is, all my friends and family are on Facebook.

It happens - a few years ago MySpace was the big thing - now it's not.

Oftentimes I'll create an account with my chosen internet name but don't do anything with it until there is a need. I call it having a parking space :) Sometimes a year or so will go by before friends will ask if I have an account. I've recently done this with pinterest. Haven't figured the site out yet but I do have a parking space when friends start asking for my account which they just recently did.

So much of life moves quicker that it used to and while I choose to live as simply as possible it is through new fangled technology that I am able to keep many aspects of my life so simple :)
