Pick you BIGGEST closet and pull EVERYTHING out- vaccuum, dust and repair any damage to walls, polls, wire shelving, etc. Paint it a fun color if you are up to it. :~) I even have a small pic of my family on one of my shelves so I see them every morning and smile.
Lay all of your clothes on your bed. This will force you to clean it up so you can sleep.
Lay out one garbage back for donation, a box of "fix it" items, a bin for "don't know" items and another smaller garbage bag, well for garbage.
Sort, quickly. Honor the immediate feeling you have for something. If you hesitate, put those items in the bin. Quick sort people. QUICK SORT!!!!
The definite items- hang back up or fold up nicely and put back in the closet/dresser. The don't knows- put the lid on the bin and place it in an out of the way space. I guarantee, if you don't come back to those items in x amount of time (I give myself 3 months, which is enough for a season) donate them.
Take the donations out to your vehicle for drop off and take out the trash.
If you are feeling up to, the keep items, try them all on and make sure they are 110% ok with you.
I did this and I found several items, while I loved them, didn't fit me right.
I am down to 1/3 of the things I had in my closet but all of it fits. Hubby though I lost my mind at firt but now he sees I have been wearing everything and since he helps with the laundry, it's much easier for him to put things away.
Another option is to lay our your keep items and see what matches, where you might have gaps, new outfits, etc. This really helped me purge out the weird colors/items I never wore because they didn't go with something else. I finally have SOME style..just a little. :)
