I went with my daughter (the birthmother) and we met baby and parents at a restaurant and then went to the mall play area since there were not parks around. It was really nice. She picked awesome parents for her baby and we are pretty compatible overall. We spent a couple hours together, I wasn't sure if it would be awkward but it went really smoothly. He is huge! 7 1/2 months and 18 lbs, he was 5lbs at birth. They gave us each a present of a nice photo framed. We went things for christmas and he had the blankey that I knit for him with him.

Anyway, it was nice.

That sounds like an excellent day. I'm glad all people involved are kind and thinking of what's best for the baby.

That sounds lovely. Is it an open or semi-open adoption? It's really great.

NZ adoptions have to be open due to the value of whanau (family) in the maori tradition and culture. When possible, maori children are always placed with maori families (maori orphans are rare, though, as usually other family members take them first), but even for pakeha (other, non-maori) children, the adoptions are wide-open.

It's a gamble, doing it here. You go into a book, and if you get chosen, then you get a baby, and if you don't, then you don't. Apparently, there arent' many babies up for adoption in NZ, and not many parents who go in the list get to adopt.

It's a powerful process, I think. A truly powerful process. Your daughter changed those parent's world, you know? She did such a loving thing for her child and that family.
