For some of us this is the best season to plant a tree, and I hope everyone will give some thought to planting a tree this year.
Planting a tree is a small legacy that you can leave to future generations.
Here is a site that will help you select the best tree for your situation - Selectree (http://selectree.calpoly.edu/attribute_search.lasso)
I'm putting in another cherry, a pear, and two apple trees - and one sequoia!
Cool! Thanks for posting! I'm definitely going to plant a couple of apple trees and I might try a nut tree--anyone have any suggestions/experiences with nuts? (Keep family stories out of it, please!)
Someone will need to plant two....one in IrisLily's name....you know she isn't going to plant one but might cut one down instead. ;)
I would like to plant a couple small fruit trees....all my berry bushes died.

We are going to plant some small pine trees that will grow quickly, for privacy...
Planting fruit and nut trees intimidate me...I think Mrs. m may have some nut trees...

For more information on trees, check out the Arbor Day Foundation (http://www.arborday.org/index.cfm).
They have lots of advice - and free trees with membership (though I bet the trees they send are really tiny.)
I'm actually on the board of a neighborhood nonprofit whose primary mission is to plant trees in our hood. We have a planting coming up of 30 trees.
Fall is the best time here to plant trees but it took a while to get approval so now is better than never.
Planted 13 new little trees last year, then experienced the worst drought since the dust bowl! thinking hard about planting this year as i still need to baby these new little lives from last year. But, yeah, have 2 figs arriving this spring....and maybe some walnuts...we'll see.

Oh you people. Fine. Just litter the universe with the sun-blocking-nutrient-hogging- water-sponging things, I don't care as long as you keep them away from me.
We lost our two big producers of sour cherries this year. I nagged and nagged DH to start their replacements 3 years ago but he would not. For sour cherries I make exception to my No New Trees EVER! rule. On a more cheery note, DH (a certified arborist) just told me that the 24 year old ash tree in our yard has probably seen its last year and will will have to have it taken down soon.

Iris, I love sour cherries - so pretty! but I don't do enough baking/canning to justify using the real estate for them.
I only have a small patch of irises (around my dogs grave) but they prefer mostly shade. They are California natives.
