UGGGG! Recently a locally owned grocery store chain here in Arizona - Basha's - had a situation in which somehow malware was installed on it's computers and shopper's credit and debit card numbers would be lifted and used in Mexico. Well, today it happened to me - luckily some fraud monitoring service caught it and called me. I have since reported the charge of $129.85 from Guanajuato, Mexico as fraud and my credit union was very decent about it and it seems as if I will be getting a temporary credit and a permanent credit very soon as Basha's is working to get this all settled quickly. So that's good and there is a sane ending.

My issue is - how crazy has this world become? And innocent charge to your debit card can end out with fraudulent charges going through on your card from across an international border. To me this is technology's dark side. UGGGGGH! Thanks for listening and whoever ran up this charge in central Mexico, I hope the party gets raided!!!! Rob

That sucks. I'm glad you were able to have the fraudulent charges removed.

I have no idea how the CC companies ever figure out what people do or do not do. I can charge things in back alley's in China, be in Australia while charging vacations in Japan but if I dare charge an iPhone App of $1.99 or buy a kindle book for $2.99 we get a call of suspicious charges??? Really? Never mind how many hundreds of other books & apps I've charged over the past 3+ YEARS, suddenly that's suspicious??

I hear ya, gimmethesimplelife!

Too bad. Guanajuato's a lovely city. But a university city as well, with lots of smart young geeks. Pity.

I hope this is resolved for you soon, Rob.

Sorry to hear about that Rob but glad they caught it. This is one of many reasons I am an "all cash, all the time" kind of girl. The only time I use CC (and never use a debit card) now is when travelling and just for flights, hotels, and car rentals - not for shopping or buying anything else.

I just heard that Sprouts was compromised in AZ too, from January 25-30 or something like that. I was one of those people. I canceled my card before any charges showed up. Thank gosh you caught yours early too!

I know someone else caught up in the Bashas hacker scam too. Glad to hear your credit union is cooperating.
I'm hoping there's a special circle in hell for these hackers. It's stealing money without putting a gun in your face to do it, but it's still nerve-wracking.
On a related note, I've purchased some help with identity theft from my insurer for something like $1-$2/month. The horror stories I've heard and read about in terms of dealing with your credit report and the other post-hacked hassles make this seem worthwhile should anything like that happen to me.
