Just posted an entry in another thread related to disinfecting, and thought of diaper pails (cloth diaper pails).

What sort of routine did everyone have (cloth users) Re: disinfecting the plastic diaper pail(s) in their homes? Once a week? Once a month? Never?

Hate to admit it... earned a D-grade in this department in my home! Next to never...

I never used a diaper pail. What i did was fill (low) the washer in the morning with water and some bleach, and as I used them during the day, i just tossed them into the washer. At the end of the day, I simply ran them through. If it was wash day, I would 'hold' the dirty in a pail until I was finished washing, then did my usual.

It's sort of disgusting to think of it now, but I believe I just rinsed it out each time I washed diapers, filled it with water and some detergent, and started using it again.

We don't have a pail, just a wetbag. It is machine washable, so I just throw it in whenever I do the diapers.

I like your washer method, peggy. That is brilliant! Our washing machine is two floors down from the nursery, though, and I do a load of clothes everyday, so I am not sure it would be feasible for us.

Uber-creative, Peggy! I'm gathering you did rubber pants separate (by hand), because speaking from experience... my top-loading agitator washing machine destroyed rubber pants!

Tammy. I wet-pailed with my first two... then moved to dry-pailing after reading about it. Used to split my guts on laundry day packing the wet-pail downstairs. Would sprinkle a table spoon (or two) of baking soda into the pails at the end of each day to help keep odour down. Found those diaper pail deodorant disks made the pail smell even worse!

Kat. Those wet-bags are nifty! Read a blog where the mom hung the bag from a doorknob.

I cleaned it out about once a month using Pinesol liquid cleaner. It just seemed to get so smelly at times. I thought it would help. Not really sure if it was worth the effort though. LOL

Whenever I washed a load of diapers I would empty the entire diaper pail, fill with fresh water and detergent again. I remember how heavy the diaper pail was when I was draining it into the toliet, then I would carry it downstairs full of heavy wet diapers. Maybe that's what did my back in.... ;)

The toliet always got a good cleaning after that! :)

LOL, Wildflower! I ran this very question by my mom who replied, "I cleaned the diaper pail twice with each of you... once at the start to dust/freshen it, and once again when you were done with diapers".

The intense ammonia odour of urine (almost heat) is what I remember most when dumping. Like opening the cap to a bottle of household ammonia and taking a giant whiff! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/chrism/Expressions/stinky.gif
