Any ideas for a meaningful, frugal, happy and memorable way to commemorate a move? My sister and BiL are moving to a small town about 2.5 hours west of the Twin Cities. We are happy for them, but not happy for us! :) Who knows when we will see them now? :(

I thought of a dinner out, or a dinner at our house . . . they are not really party people and have few close friends. It would be our side of the family, about five or six people plus them. They are moving to his family's town so they wouldn't really be involved in this event. I want to do something to mark the occasion, but it's not a good bye, really . . .

Or maybe not an event at all, but some kind of gift? Or experience?

Ideas welcome!

What are their interests, Kelli? Do they grow things? You might consider things like seeds to start a little garden, or a gift certificate for a plant nursery, etc.

Does their small town have a chamber of commerce? Something where you could print off information on where to find things like a good cup of tea, daycare, dog food, useful things like that?

What will they miss most about where they live now? Is there a restaurant or something that they'd appreciate a last hurrah at? I like the idea of having a gathering - maybe all the guests could bring some meaningful thing that would help them get settled into their new place.

I've got no ideas to offer, Kelli, but just wanted to say, they must be moving some place very near where I grew up. It is a beautiful part of the state! :D

Yes, there is a famous greasy spoon type burger joint here in St. Paul that they really like. That's a good idea . . .

What has been given to me when I moved away after college for my first job don't work anymore. No one writes letters!

New address book - the type that is a small 3-ring binder, to allow for additional pages to be added.

Nice box of stationery.

For us it was the people who, unanticipated by us, came when we were filling up our trailer, just sat there on the porch until we had a question or comment, and waved us goodbye when we left. Lady Bird Johnson, when asked what's the best thing a person can give another, said "Good memories. This is a good memory for us.
