View Full Version : A Simple Wedding
BayouBoy and I have set the date (March 16 which is 3/16, and I love the number 316) and will be married We will be having a Quaker ceremony which is a simple ceremony, a small circle of friends and family, no fancy stuff, no music and pomp and pageantry. We will gather at his parents and say our vows by the bayou on his parents property, which adjoins ours. His parents have been married over 50 years and to have both of them at our wedding is so wonderful.
I will wear a simple white lace sundress and BayouBoy will be in his best jeans and a nice shirt that matches the ribbons on my dress.
My lil sister will make the wedding cake and another sis will take pics.
My cousin is making our Quaker wedding certificate for all the guests to sign (which I will frame and display in our home).
My sis in law will make a lace shawl for me to wear.
The only flowers there will be those that grow in his parents yard.
Whatever my friends and family wish to do for my wedding (cake, food, etc) is greatly appreciated and I am not insisting that things be a certain way. I tell them to use their best judgement and do it as they please and that will make me happy. BayouBoy wants salt and pepper shakers as the wedding cake topper but other than that my sis is free to do as she pleases when making my cake. She is sooo excited and says she will surprise me with her creation. She makes beautiful cakes!!
This is the wedding I want. Those extravagantly planned wedding with all the fluff are not my style at all. I am possibly the most undemanding bride ever. I want this to be a stress free day where everyone is comfortable. I don't want people all dressed up. The kids will be running free in the yard, everyone will be relaxed and the ceremony will be quite short and sweet.
I will post details of how the event goes.

So lovely. We also had a quaker wedding.
I wanted it to be super-simple. Typically, the quaker meeting provides the food pot-luck style (or at least, that is how it was done at the meeting that we attended), but my family wanted a more formal occasion, and I had to reign them in a bit! I think it ended up a decent balance. :)

Sounds wonderful. We had a very simple wedding(hippie style) and it is a lovely memory to this day, 38 years later....

Congrats! Those are the best kinds of weddings. Pretty much what I had planned and then my mother got a hold of it and I ended up with the wedding she always wanted. Enjoy your day!

It sound like a lovely day...with a lot of touching parts to it. I like how your family and firms will stand in a circle around you and how you will only have flowers from your relative's propert. Looking forward to hearing more about it. Congratulations! Christine

I wish more people would plan weddings this way. I don't mean that your choices should be others' choices, and we all know that "simple" is in the eye of the beholder. But I sincerely wish more couples would plan their weddings true to their own values and personalities, instead of going with all the default options that abound today. I am so bored of hotel ballroom-4 matching bridesmaids-same old food-same old DJ song list-garter toss-bouquet-toss-useless wedding favors adorning the tables-color coordinated everything-pretty instead of delicious cake-etc-etc. weddings. Love seeing the personality of bride and groom (and groom!) shine through, no matter what that means.

It sounds lovely. We had a fairly simple wedding as well and I am so glad now that we focused on sharing our day with family and friends in a way that was meaningful to us and allowed us to spend time with those whom we don't often see. Several of them have passed on now, and because my family is far-flung, it was one of the few times in the past couple of decades that the family was all together.

The two weddings I've been to that actually "took" were both held outside in lovely settings. I can't think of anything more spiritual.

I do so agree with Kara, those cookie cutter weddings in anonymous hotel ballrooms and "halls" are for the birds. Dullsville.
Thanks for the wonderful wishes everyone. I have a dislike for over the top wedding where everything is choreographed and coordinated and people are told where to sit and what to wear, etc. People who insist their wedding be "perfect" often end up so disappointed because that just isn't life. Of course there will be something that doesn't go according to plan but to me, that it the fun of life. Those are the stories that will be told with laughter for years.
I always look at those wedding that cost tens of thousands of dollars and think " I bet the debt for that wedding outlast the marriage". So often that is true and by the time the wedding takes place, everyone is already sick of hearing about it, the drama and the bride and grooms demands.
So this wedding is perfect for me. Simple, comfortable and fun.

Funny story, a friend had two little flower girls and a ring bearer (I skipped having those, tried for a child free wedding) anyway she taped $5 bills to the floor where they were to stand. When the wedding was done they looked at her, she nodded, they grabbed the money and ran up the isle.
Well the big day is just a week away and although the wedding is just "immediate" family ( his parents, our siblings and their families, our kids and grandkids, we have an estimated headcount of over 40. Yikes! But I am not gonna stress over anything, whatever happens, happens. I am surrounded by good people who will help put this all together.

BayouGirl, I looked at your pics when you posted them in your album a couple of days ago... It looked like a wonderful wedding! Congratulations--I loved all the beautiful touches, like the purple ribbons.

My sister did indeed make the flowers on the cake. She did a beautiful job and the cake was so delicious. I was so happy with how our simple little wedding turned out.
