View Full Version : Jingles... (old commercials)

The latest threads, all about detectives... posted by Life_is_Simple, was so much fun, I thought I'd start a new thread on jingles.

Any jingles are fair game, but older ones (I thought) would be a lot of fun, because (most) everything back then was sort of kooky, at least in the way of commercials it was...

Here are two I remember from way back.

Our legs, fit your legs, they hug you they hold you, they never let you go!

Coffee mate... tastes great... coffee mate... smooths the flavour, so that coffee mate... makes your cup of coffee taste great!

Pop pop, fizz fizz, oh what a relief it is ...

Oh I wish I were an Oscar Meyer weiner ... that is what I'd really like to be ... 'cause if I were an Oscar Meyer weiner... everyone would be in love with me ...

Kellogg's Sugar Corn Pops, sugar pops are tops!

I could go on and on and on ... :~)

The Coca Cola ad from the 70's - I'd like to give the world a Coke......(too bad it's full of high fructose corn syrup which is horrible for the liver)......Also I'm a Pepper, he's a Pepper, she's a Pepper, wouldn't you like to be a Pepper too? (Dr. Pepper, great commercial but ditto on the high fructose corn syrup.) Rob

Two more I thought of - the Lite Brite Ad from the 70's - Lite Brite make things with light.....(it was a kid's toy if anyone doesn't know), and also the Merlin ad from the late 70's (another kid's toy)...Where's Merlin now, it's not there, it's out with Billy playing Magic Square....

McDonald's is your kind of place, it's a hap, hap, happy place, McDonald's is your kind of place!

I am stuck on Bandaids, 'cause Bandaids stuck on me!

Mr. Clean gets rid of dirt and grime and grease in just a minute, Mr. Clean will clean your whole house and everything that's in it, Mr. Clean, Mr. Clean

My bologna has a first name, it's Oscar. My bologna has a second name, it's Mayer. Oh, I love to eat it everyday and if you ask me why I'll say because Oscar Mayer has a way with b-o-l-o-g-n-a.

Take a ring, and add another ring and then another ring and then you've got three rings, Ballentine! And now it's premium, it's a very special glass of beer.

Soft Soft Flush-a-byes, what a time to be born.
This surely must have been a jingle for one of the first disposalble diapers. This will be forever stuck in my head. I was in first(?) grade and remember being at my desk, happy and swinging my arms back and forth on the desk top singing this. The teacher yelled my name, opps we were suppose to be working not singing to ourselves.

'Calgon...take me away!!'

You can try hard..or you can try soft, soft will get him every time, Love's Baby Soft'.
I was a kid/preteen during these commercials which depicted teenage girls. some trying 'hard' to get the guy-trying to steal a kiss, showing him their cool car, etc. And the more 'baby' girls tried 'soft' oh so coy and ringing their bell on the 10 speed..the soft girls always won:~)

I love remembering the old slogans too. Just the other day one of my friends at work scratched his head and commented how itchy it was and without even having to think about it I said "That little itch should be telling you something..." (head and shoulders)

I'm pretty good with pre-1990 tv trivia. After I graduated college that spring I lived for almost 10 years without watching any tv so all my friends know that I have an almost total gap in knowledge of tv trivia from the 90's.

"I'm gonna wash that man right outta my hair" for a shampoo. I never understood that one but it stuck with me. Can't remember the rest of the jingle or the product though.

That song is actually from the rogers and hammerstein musical South Pacific. Other than the fact that it mentioned washing hair, I agree, it didn't make much sense. Kind of like the contact lens commercial that used the The Guess Who song "These Eyes" even though the song's meaning had nothing to do with visual clarity.

Yes, but you know it WASN'T full of high fructose corn syrup when that commercial was around in the early 1970's. That was when we did have the real thing - cane sugar. That is why the supposedly Coke Classic tastes so very different than the cokes we grew up with if you are, well, a certain age! LOL!! I seldom drink cola anymore but when I do I seek out an Hispanic grocery were I can buy cokes bottled, (yes in glass bottles), in Mexico and made with pure cane sugar.

They changed it from "I'm gonna wash that man right out of my hair" to "I'm gonna wash that GRAY right out of my hair." It was for a hair color product.

Another hair color commercial was based on "Let's Fall in Love" by Cole Porter. Instead of "Birds do it, bees do it, even educated fleas do it. Let's do it let's fall in love". The ad was "Blondes do it, reds do it, brunettes who wouldn't be caught dead do it. They do it why shouldn't you." Meaning you too should color your hair. (I mean, jeepers, shouldn't everyone?)

We always enjoy changing the jingles. Instead of "Oscar Meyer has a way with B-O-L-O-G-N-A", we sing "Oscar Meyer has a way to rearrange your DNA".

Remember "If you don't look good we don't look good, Vidal Sasson"? We sing "If you don't look good we don't care, Vidal Baboon"

And for Armour hot dogs (given the unhealthy-ness of such fare and what it's doing to our kids) we sing "What kind of kids eat Armour hot dogs? Fat kids, fat kids, kids who are really fat, fat kids, diabetic kids, even kids who are morbidly obese eat hot dogs, Armour hot dogs. The dogs that make kids fat!" Not PC or funny but possibly more factual.

SEL. It's been many... many years, but I definitely remember the unique and classic taste of 1970's Coca-Cola! Gosh was it EVER good!

LOL, Sunnyjoe! The whole "ring around the collar thing", used to stump me. I'd think to myself, "take one clean shirt, apply it to a clean man working in an office, yet the collar gets a black ring around it"? LOL!

I've always wondered if laundry detergent was really crappy back then. I've been wearing collared shirts to offices regularly for over 20 years now and have never done anything special to keep the collars clean, yet I've never had a ring around one.

Gregg - the jingle was very similar to an ad for 'kickers' shoes advertised and sold to teenagers in the early 1970's, in Australia. They were two tone blue suede lace up desert boots.

It went 'what kind of kids wear kickers, all kinds of kids who wear shoes, ( and continued on similar words to what you wrote), etc.'

Very similar wording to the advert. that you remembered, I would say. Gail
