View Full Version : Today I set out in the garden
4 cherry tomato plants
4 cucumber plants
What are you setting out in your garden these days?? :)
I tore up one side of our grass lawn and put in a 10 x 20 free form xeriscape area so some cacti and the rest native TX plants (about 12 different ones). As far as food, I have tomatos and basil ready to plant. The squirrels ate all my greens - nibbled them to the ground:( as my neighbor witnessed.
It's too early yet to think about gardening in our area, however, we're getting ready to turn our garden over (shovel/hand), something we do each year (this time) to help set the garden for the start of the growing season. Can't wait!
Boo hoo- its snowing and sleeting heavily today, there is no putting out of plants this week. I do have some low tunnels set up for the last few weeks, and even with the meager sun. the soil temperature is 55 degrees, so I will likely put out some kale seedlings this weekend and hope that today is the last of the snow.
Its upper 20's here today with really strong winds. Snow forecasted several times in the near future........so not even thinking about being in the garden yet.
The first thing that goes in every year.........usually in April, are the snow peas.
I may plant some herbs and lettuces in containers before then though.
I have to get things in the ground early because by June the heat will be killing everything but the okra which seems to thrive in our heat and humidity.
Pinky toe, I'm sorry about the squirrels getting your greens. Winter greens do well here too.
Those of you in colder climates will be getting your gardens up and going about the time mine starts to burn up from the heat.

We have a new front fence, so I'm re-landscaping the entire front yard. I'm trying to use plants we already have (an abundance, my neighbors never get rid of a plant, they give it to me.)
I've dug up all my roses and replanted them along the fence.
I'm propagating some Echium (grows super fast) which I'll put at the ends of the fence, near the driveway.
I have six tomatoes out in five-gallon pots. I left room to put more soil, I kind of keep piling it on. They're looking good. (2 Early girl, 2 Brandywine, 2 cherry)
Have planted a cherry tree, pear tree, sequioa, and put two citrus trees (kumquat and orange) in containers.
Transplanted a bunch of feijoa that were growing in random places to make a sort of hedge.
Had millions of wild onions growin out at my cabin, dug up a bunch and have planted them on my shady hillside.
I'm moving my raised bed (something I keep putting off...the greens are still going strong) going to try a three sisters garden this year (Indian corn, beans, winter squash.)
Have lettuce growing in containers on the deck.
Sounds like a lot when I write it down, but right now my yard is such a mess!! so much to do!

I've shoveled three times today and it just started snowing again after a lull. And the snow had finally melted enough so that in some places you could see dirt. Heavy sigh.
I did water the indoor plants, though. I had time because I had a snow day from work.
Back to the hot chocolate.
I transplanted my little red pepper seedlings into larger pots and planted some coriander seeds I recently purchased. So difficult to find it here in the stores. My poor little pepper plants aren't very strong because we don't get much sun indoors and it's been too windy to set them outside on the balcony. Today I hope to plant mesculin mixed lettuce seeds into a pot.
Lucky you! Last weekend I planted lettuce and kale seedlings and spinach seeds in my salad table. Too early here for much else but early greens and peas. Those I will plant this weekend.
I transplanted three big artichokes, and they're currently in transplant shock. They look truly pathetic. We set out pea starts, chard, pansies, sorrel, and transplanted a lot of strawberries & parsley. Yay spring!!

I have to wait till after Easter. Otherwise we might get a late frost. I've been spreading my homemade compost around my fruit trees. I still have several to go. Harvested broccoli and kale. My leeks are looking strong, too. I may plant some flower seeds in my front cottage garden. I think this year I will focus on growing melons. Last year I planted way too many zucchini and pumpkins. They were great, though.
