View Full Version : Shaver for DH's head
DH has come up with wanting to shave his own hair. He needs one of those things barbers use, where he can set it on #1 and get all his hair that length, with some help from me. What do we need to know to do this so he looks good, and what brand or features would you recommend? Since he has real short hair, this would save $.

If DH is satisfied with cutting all his hair at "1", I don't think there's any more you need to know. I would just get a decent-quality clipper set and away you go.
Wahl and Oster are popular brands of clippers; at least Wahl makes pro-level products. I probably would not buy the cheapest model you can find; go up one or two levels. The entry level models are, IMHO, built too much to a price (too many plastic parts) and won't give you the longevity you expect. I have a Norelco that I like -- except for the rechargeable battery, which always seems to need charging when I want to trim (facial) hair >:( , so I would consider a plug-in clipper, though then you have to account for a dangling cord, which may be a nuisance for the DIYer. One feature I like about my Norelco is that I can take off the "1" clipper (or whichever number) and use the vibrating cutters directly for precision trimming (sideburns, etc.).
Hope that helps...
I've been doing this for the past decade or so. I use a Wahl clipper and a one half inch comb attachment (I think it's a #4). The attachments which came with the clipper range from one quarter inch to about 2 inches.
I do the majority of the cutting myself, depending upon my wife to do a little cleanup on the back of my neck with the attachment removed.
<-------- That's the end result. :)
Thank you two, that's a good bit more info than we had, and sounds like what we need to know.

DH has been doing his own head for the last 5 or so years, with a Wahl (pretty sure it was the cheapest model) from Wal-Mart. He had to experiment with the attachments initially to find that the 1/4" one gives him the cut he wants. But it has become super-easy for him to do: set the correct-sized attachment and just shave the whole head. And like Alan's wife, I do the "clean-up" on the back of his neck for him.
It has paid for itself many times over for us.
I use a Wahl clipper on both my boys. I bought it at Target for $15 about 17 years ago. Works fine.
Thanks to you all we got a Wahl. It has both cord and battery. We did the first cut on DH today and it looks better than the barbers'. We use 1". It felt so empowering. It paid for half of itself today, and the next time will have paid for itself altogether. He is very proud of his head since then.

Very cool, and good for you. Delighted that you are joining the "club"! A year from now you can calculate how very much money you've saved by DH doing his own haircut.....
I'm not sure what a haircut costs these days but based on what I used to pay, my $15 or so investment has saved me several thousand dollars, not to mention all the time spent going to and from and waiting my turn.
I just want to point out, for the ladies that feel brave enough, that they also can cut their own hair. There are plenty of U-Tube videos on how to do so. I figure I have saved $800 since I last visited the hairdresser a year and three months ago.

I'm not brave enough. :)
