View Full Version : SNOW DAY!

After accumulating 17" of the white stuff over the weekend, I decided to have a snow day of my own. I used to take 'mental health days' periodically, and have gotten out of the habit with this job. After 8 years of NEVER calling off because of weather, I was okay with it. I've been told so often I'm SO important (HA! No one else wants to do my job, I think) that I feel terrible if I don't go in if I'm dying. I think it was needed.

Before noon, I had finished 4 loads of laundry, unloaded and loaded the dishwasher, made chili, and refinished a lawyer's bookcase that was in my farmhouse basement for 20 years before I dragged it home. I just Murphys Oil soaped, steel wooled and tacked it, then put new oil on. Tomorrow I'll do final oil and it'll be ready for my living room. I've decided I'm going to do the "clock" wall and utilize the bookcase for the 'sitting clocks'. I have two antique 'kitchen clocks' I'll put on shelves above, the mantle clock on top, and then I knew I had some domed anniversary clocks somewhere...dug in the garage & found the tote they were in. I pulled out 2 anniversary clocks that are not working (it's okay, I know a really good clock repair guy) and one that kinda does. I packed them back up into a box to take to him next week. But in the bottom of the tote....Oh MY! I found all the letters my grandmother and I wrote back and forth, beginning in college through her passing in 2005. And the children's book that was my absolute favorite that she read to me over and over. I spent a couple of hours "with" my Grandma, and it was awesome!! I miss her so every day. I can't believe those have been sitting in my garage all this time.

After that, I have finished two UFO (UnFinished Objects) crafty things, and am about to undertake the next one, some scrapbooking.

This may not belong in Family Matters, so Moderator, feel free to move it. It just seemed like a "family" day.

Did anyone else have a snow day? What did you do??

Well no, no snow day here, but.....OMG, are there really that many hours in your day?!!! How awesome - and kudos to you - and how I wish I had some of your energy!

My idea of a snow day: (1) make coffee, consume coffee while watching snow out the back door; (2) decide to cook, or decide to take something pre-made out of freezer and not-cook, but both ways it must involve something soup-y or casserole-y, while watching snow out back door; (3) internet reading, evolving to magazine and then book reading, coffee evolves to hot tea, while watching snow out back door; (4) a bit of guilt, then no more than 30 minutes of strenuous outdoor activity shoveling said snow, clearing path for dog, etc., then back indoors for cup o'tea and to watch snow out back door; and finally (5) hot bath, comfies, glass of wine (okay, 3 glasses), and watching the snow out the back door.

It's nice to hear about your wonderfully-productive snow day. I am just too essentially lazy, I think.....

This is my kind of snow day.... ;)

But I admire you, Ruffian, for getting so much done!

I love snow days. When I lived in California my theory is the state moved so fast because they never had snow days and it made them a little frantic. So snow days are very important. I have only had them on weekends lately anyway so i don't have that stress of work that somehow does not quit even in snow. I have Spring Break this week so I am taking it like a snow day to some extent. I will just talk about my fun relaxing things I have planned. * crochet a new doll wig for the doll my grandma made when we were kids (almost kid life size, it used to wear my girl scout uniform), I am having fun making curly hair in brown and light tan so she has highlights. * Clean my room including washing the baseboards of dust and vacuuming really well.* if the snow melts today i will set up the second garden raised bed plot* set up our compost system that the kids are actually using for kitchen scraps!* do laundry and take time to mend, stain remove and iron all the things that usually get passed over. * type up dharma talks that I have given over a 10 week series (a few more to go) and then email to the list. Okay now to handle the boring taxes and crap.

Ok, I'm seriously jealous. I hate snow, and generally don't miss it now that we live in San Francisco, but your snow day sounds awesome! In my perfect world we'd get 1 or 2 days like that per year, but have our current weather every other day.

Yay for snow days! Not that we've had any this year >:( We did have 9 inches one Sunday, which was nice since I slept in and then started on the coffee-tea-wine trajectory. We also usually take the dog for a walk in the park, with snowshoes if necessary! I can't believe you only shovel once, Blackdog...if it's a true snow day here we better shovel every few hours or each shovelful will be difficult.
