View Full Version : made my own compost bin
I have started my compost pile but it bothered me to just have it laying open. I don't want neighbors or landlord to bug me about it. And I still miss my compost bin from California that I didn't have room for on the moving truck, sniff sigh. So I took one of the many large rubbermaid tubs I seem to have on my porch and turned it upside down. I cut all the way around so it has a lid you can lift. I put it over my compost hole so it all looks neater. I think when it gets warm out I will need to drill holes in the side as well, maybe add some tent stakes so it stays put in high winds before it is more full. The easy thing is that it is portable. I can dig a new hole next to it, move the composter top over and start a new pile as this one gets full.
I love it! I'd be lost without a compost bin, although the garden is the next best place to discard common kitchen scraps/waste, which we occasionally do, especially this time of the year when the growing season is right around the corner.
What a great, frugal solution -- good job!

you are a compost queen!
Sounds fantastic, Zoebird! Esp the idea of moving it every so often, which will leave behind wonderful soil for whatever you plant there. You probably will need to drill some holes if it's getting baby poo smell (meaning too wet, anaerobic breakdown). I had something like that to start in Phoenix and even there it needed the holes, despite the extremely dry weather!
That's ZoeGirl, who is doing an awesome job. :)
I've been trying to get my own compost going here, but finally gave up. BUT, I am working to get home pick up of compostables through the city, forming a small group of people who want it -- many of us have no room to compost. Yay! Sharing the costs, etc.
