The NPR show will go off the air at the end of July. I've always liked listening to that show and will miss it. The word is that it will be replaced by "Here and Now", a magazine style show along the lines of "All Things Considered".

That made me wonder about "Here and Now", it's already part of the schedule. It looks like it will be expanding to 2 hours. I like "Here and Now" (actually I like "Talk of the Nation" better, I'm sad to see it go), but unless they alter the format quite a bit, I don't see them stretching it to a viable 2 hour show.

Bummer.

I have to admit that most of the NPR talk shows are pretty generic to me. If they're replacing it with something similar, I doubt I'll notice the difference.

This doesn't apply to their themed shows, such as On the Media or To the Best of Our Knowledge. I'd be upset if those went off the air.

I agree, many of those shows blur together. You are right that On The Media is specific, I really like that show. I also like Tom Ashbrook's interview show at night, he's good. I am tiring of Ira Glass and This American Life, he wants to be a news journalist. Last Sunday I almost turned off his hour long show on Social Security, it had such a "gee whiz whoda thunk" tone that it annoyed me. People who think about Social Security know this stuff, Ira.

I think every local public radio affiliate decides their own programming schedule. I know in MN I have never heard of "Here and Now," and we have one of the most robust public radio cultures in the US, or so I've heard. ;)

Funny about This American Life, IL - I am just really digging it lately, and listened to that show on Social Security disability today, and found it just incredible. It was kind of one of those, man, if I HAD just stopped to think about it, nothing really that Earth-shattering, but I never have. But since you bring it up, I was raving about the Harper High School shows with some friends and one of my girlfriends was practically spitting venom about Ira's mannerisms and she is totally OVER This American Life. I am feeling that way about A Prairie Home Companion lately! Can't listen about powder milk biscuits and hear Garrison's whistle-y "s" anymore! And it happened really fast for me - I must have been in a bad mood one week when it was on, and just can hardly stand the show since!

Enjoying The Dinner Party and am nuts over The Story, both of which I get via podcast. And when I can catch it, Wits is fun and of course, I still have the dream of going to the Chase Bank Auditorium in downtown Chicago for a taping of Wait! Wait! Nerdsville!!!! :D

I will miss Talk of the Nation and its host.

Funny, I used to love listening to PHC when I lived in AZ, but have only rarely listened since moving to MN. I'm surrounded by all the MN mannerisms daily, don't need the show anymore! We did go see the performance once and that was a lot of fun.

Same here. I have to admit I did lose a fair amount of interest in the show when Keillor tired of the treatment he felt he was receiving in Minnesota and moved the show to New York City. He (and the show) acquired an "edge" that remained when the show moved back here and I just find the show far less appealing now.

I too will miss Talk of the Nation. I am glad they are leaving Science Friday alone. Diane Rehm is my favorite though.

I will miss Talk of the Nation as well and Science Friday is great. Though sometimes I think NPR talk needs a face lift and some new material. The Cars Guys were great but have been on forever and our station still plays their old re-runs. I actually still like PHC even though I've listened for decades. It would not break my heart if it were replaced with something else that was a decent variety show. I can barely listen to Wait, Wait...

I will miss it, probably as much as I still miss The Great American Dream Machine. Sigh. I wonder what Marshall Efron is doing now.

Ahhhh, I remember that one. I was a big fan of E.G. Marshall's Radio Mystery Theater back in the late 70's early 80's. It seem like public radio is ripe for a good mystery or drama program. Maybe a Downton Abbey for the ear or something.

How funny, Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me cracks me up. I like a little light-hearted slapsticky humor once in a while. At least as long as Peter Sagal is hosting. He's a very clever guy (IMO). Sagal was gone last week and Tom Bodett hosted. It was excruciating.

I'll miss TOTN too, but WVPE has carried the replacement for a while and it isn't too bad, except that it is really Boston-centered and has no audience participation.
The Car Guys retired months ago but are airing old shows which is why all the cars that they talk about are old models.
Ditto about Diane Rhems, she has the most civilized talk show on the air! Sadly, she is nearing retirement age too, enjoy her while you can.
