Great stories, we didn't live in the depression but the years when the kids were very young were tight! they goof around about how weird it was that i made everything from scratch but I think in a few years (they are teens) they will understand more. And i know how to darn socks properly!! Taught to me by my great grandmother, I still do darn them when I really love the pair.

Zoe, that is nice that you learned a skill from your great-grandmother and that you can still put to use today. I wish I knew my great-grandmother, I probably could have learned thrift from her too.... :)

Reminds me of the memoir, "Little Heathens" - http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss/180-8688341-5121368?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=lilttle%20heathens

a woman's true story of her years growing up in the Depression on a farm. It's great to know the skills, but I don't romanticize the day-in-day-out hard work of it.

Hi Lainey, that book looks interesting but did they talk about their animals in a negative light? I am an animal lover so when I read or see anything about slaughter etc. I am disturbed for days.

Can you let me know that book sounds good otherwise....christine

Oh I love that book! I do all the things mentioned in the article. I still darn my socks. My neighbor taught me when I was a little girl. It really does make a difference, especially over time. I plan to keep living this way regardless of the economy.

It's been a while since I read it so I honestly don't recall, but if I had to guess I'd say yes, there was some small part about farm animals.
