View Full Version : Well, looks like five months of serving again.....this time in Utah

After my words in my last post of working towards getting training, I am kind of embarrassed to admit this but I was offered and accepting a job for five months in the Flaming Gorge area of Utah waiting tables. I am so over waiting tables and part of me thinks this is a mistake, but I don't want to get into any trouble with Department of Economic Security (they are doing random checks now in Arizona) and I do like the idea of getting out of the city for five months. Also I know what craziness overall I am getting into - I go in with eyes wide open.

One good thing about this gig is that I will be only 37 miles away from a town of over 30,000 people - so I won't have that intense isolation thing going on like I did at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. It also means seeing a new area of the country, and here's THE BEST NEWS - This time I don't approach serving in a state of desperation - I do have savings this time. It's not like I don't ever have to work again, but I also don't have to live in fear for getting the bills paid right away. So if it is something that is going to adversely affect my health, I can leave. There is so much empowerment in knowing that.

When I come back to Phoenix I can try to get training again, though I don't know how sequestration is going to affect that - I understand that funds are going to be cut there and I also have seen that in Arizona unemployment benefits for those on extensions are going to be cut 16% in June, both in total amounts and in weekly amounts. Ouch!!!!!

Good news is however this works out, my bills are low, and I know how to generate some income online.....not enough to get me rich, but enough to get some bills paid. It's nice to approach serving for once in a position that is not entirely of fear. Rob

Well, congrats on the short gig. I always say 'a person can do anything for 6 months' so 5 months sounds o.k. A different area will be nice, enjoy that aspect of the job. It will be nice that your bills are paid and you might be able to say 'no I don't want to work that extra shift today'.

Won't your unemployment claim have renewed though? In other words you worked several months - you'll no longer be on extended unemployment but just on regular old unemployment, the clock will have rolled over again due to the time you spent working?

It is a pity you can't take classes and the job, but I too might take a bird in the hand over two in the bush as they say.

That you have a plan is great, and having a potential escape plan even better. Wishing you happy employment.....

Well DH and I can totally relate, we'll be working on a dude ranch all summer in Western Colorado.

The work takes us away from our online ventures, it's tough and we don't always get the props that we deserve from frufru guests who've never had a service job in their lives, but it helps replenish our bank accounts and the best part is...it's not forever!

There's a lot of freedom in jobs like ours, enjoy!

Congrats Rob - Flaming Gorge is great. Not nearly as crowded as the GP so less stressful. The small city nearby Isn't too progressive though.

Hey Rob, bully for you, as our national parks hero TR would say!
I don't know where Flaming Gorge is but I will look it up, sounds pretty.
And it's cool to be working again, and 5 months work is nothing to sneer at, and best of all, there is a limit built in!
Good for you!!

Thanks everyone! I am in Mexico now getting some dental work done before I go and also helping my Mom with the process of getting her dental work done, also I am stocking up on my gout and BP meds here.....Am really looking forward to a change in my life for a brief period and I also love that there is a limit built right into it this time.....And when I get done, I am right back to Mexico to get more dental work done, so this time I also have a goal built in. I am hoping for the best but am also aware of what waiting tables these days is all about, all I can say is thank goodness this time I have money saved going into the game.....Rob

That's great Rob! I took a lot of survival jobs in between shows and they provided the cash flow I needed. Louise Hay has an affirmation I used to say, "I'm doing this job because it pays the bill right now." Sure is better than using credit cards!

My goal this time around is to start a journal of what exactly it is about serving that does not work for me after all these years and how can I replace it with something either in self employment or possibly working for someone else - in some capacity that actually works for me. But right now, it's about saving 20% and also getting more dental work done in Mexico at the end of the season. Rob
