DS called a few days ago, that his foot hurt really bad and he couldn't walk. I told him to ice it often and take an NSAID. This didn't help. Today he went to a podiatrist and the xray showed 2 small fractures in his lateral metatarsals (near the styloid area). He's to wear a special boot for 9 weeks. He's really bummed about that, since he has alot of filming jobs. But I'm thinking he's lucky he's allowed to walk with this boot on.
He doesn't jog very much, but he did a few days before this happened. He also has very flat feet.
I was guessing it was peroneal tendonitis. I've read that people with psoriasis are at higher risk for this this, which he has.
The doc said that his pain is actually in the peroneal tendon, because it attaches to where the fracture is.
Anyone else have small fractures like this? Just curious what your experiences were.
Thanks!

My brother had several stress fractures in his foot; was also advised to wear a boot. Weirdly, they were caused by osteoporosis - he's not even 50.
Don't know all the details, but it sure was painful.

Seems like feet can take forever to heal. And while your healing one spot presure is added to another causing more problems. Tell him to follow Dr's orders or 9 weeks can turn into 18. Even though my ankle is healed, I have a lot of tendon pain.
Does your son wear custom inserts for the flat feet? Made all the difference for my son. He went from hobbling and constant pain to being able to run.

Just curious Gardenarian.......does your brother have psoriasis? I'm reading that people with psoriasis can be at higher risk for osteoporosis.

Float On......I gave DS a lecture about following all the Doc's orders. I hope he listened.............sometimes he doesn't. He's a very sought-after film person and has a million jobs lined up. supposedly he can be on his feet, as long as it doesn't hurt. I hope that's true.........that he's not doing damage by being on them. I've been after him for a long time to go to a podiatrist. I forgot to ask him if the doc addressed his flat feet. Maybe they don't want to deal with that, until the bones are healed? Seems like they might heal better with a good arch support...??

So strange for him to have this, when he's not on his feet that much. He spends most of his days in a chair, editing and and doing coloring and sound on the computer. Go figure. I sure hope he's not having those "comorbid" problems with his psoriasis. He just turned 24.
I'm sorry to hear that you still have alot of ankle pain. I know when I just sprained my ankle, it took a long time for the pain to finally go away. (I think its spread all through my body though.......haha).
I forget......you didn't need the surgery after all, did you?

DS is hyperactive, and not being able to move around for several days drove him crazy. He had just moved his office out of his house.........so he couldn't even do the sitting work.
Oh well..........as they say "Life is what happens when you're making plans".
I'm wondering Float On........do you think acupuncture might help your pain?

I fell on ice late last year. My foot hurt, a lot, but since I did not have insurance I iced it, took OTC pain stuff, wrapped it whenever I had to walk and kept it elevated as much as possible.

I have been having trouble with my gait, and about three months ago I was checking my feet (have diabetes) and felt a lump just forward of the ball of my foot. I waited another two months before I bit my wallet and went to the doctor. It is a callus, which would have been much easier to treat had I gone in when I broke the bones in my foot.

Because of the diabetes, she took x-rays and there are at least three fractures in my right foot. Too late to do anything about that now, and I am feeling supremely stupid to have tried to deal with this myself.

Glad to hear that you took quick action about your son's foot pain. The boot is a small price to pay for being able to walk well and without causing further damage.

There are days when I feel that my whole life is a cautionary tale. :|(

Yes, he does! I didn't know there was a connection - I'll pass that along. Thx!

Wow Gardenarian.......I really didn't expect you to say he has it! I'm thinking of telling my son to take Calcium supplements. He already takes Vitamin D.
Just curious.....does your son take anything for the psoriasis? DS likes using Dovenex, but he hasn't gotten any in awhile, since a small tube costs over $400. Its ridiculous.

Jilly........try not to feel too bad. You were trying to make the best choice under the conditions. Life can get much more difficult when you don't have insurance, and you just try to make due.
Plus, in my experience, sometimes I go to the doc for something that ends up being nothing.......but I only know that, after I've spent tons of money on tests, etc.
I hope your foot is feeling better.
