I keep seeing the thread "The Upside of aging" and thinking "what upside?"
I thought I'd ask for your thoughts on staying young!

I recently read this book, which I reviewed in the "What are you reading?" thread:

"20 years younger : look younger, feel younger, be younger!" by Bob Greene. I found some useful tips in this book, though like all books of this type it is heavily padded (with exercise programs and recipes no one will use.) I found the sections on dietary supplements and skin care useful. I have been using his skin care protocol and darned if my skin doesn't look better! I already exercise quite a lot but after reading this I realize that I do skip days, and I am being more conscious of being in touch with my body all the time. Overall, I recommend this book to anyone who is feeling a little older than they'd like!

The skin protocol I mentioned is a very simple cleaning and moisturizing routine: AM - Cleanser, Moisturizer, Sunscreen. PM - Scrub, Cleanser, Moisturizer. Probably most of you do something like this but I was just using a warm washcloth (no cleanser) and combination sunscreen/moisutizer. It really has made a difference in my skin.

I can see some upsides to aging - menopause (yay), wisdom and all that, but I sure am feeling creaky. My digestion is not great, I have mild arthritis, my back is somewhat touchy - all the usual stuff. Yoga helps immensely, but I broke a finger in January and couldn't practice much for a couple of months - and I have not got back in shape yet! For me, massage is almost magical in increasing my overall well-being - but too expensive to indulge in more than once a month. (I am looking into bartering for massage.)

If anyone has a good book to recommend, a supplement or food that has made you feel better, or any other tips, I'd love to hear them!

This is pretty much what my routine consists of - minus the scrub. My skin is incredibly sensitive. Also, this Butter Oil / Cod Liver Oil has done wonders for my skin!! http://store.spiritofhealthkc.com/green-pastures-butter-oil-cod-liver-oil-blend-120-caps/

I also like this cleanser very much: http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=336913&catid=190101&aid=338666&aparam=goobase_filler&device=c&network=g&matchtype=

I use mainly Clinique products and am dealing with a really horrible case of adult acne. It's very hard since it is on my upper arms and back mainly. So swimming and sleeveless shirts are out for me...UGH. Right now I am on a lot of medications for something else so I refuse to add antibiotics to the list and they really are so bad for you anyway.....

i like to do oil and honey cleansing. i don't wear sunscreen unless i'm out in the intensity of it (from 10 am to 3 pm), and even then, I try for coverage/shade rather than sunscreen.

I think that yoga and meditation do wonders. The yoga posture practice works each of the joints through healthy ranges of motion, and that helps keep the body in great shape with lower risk of injury. It's also body-weight (or weight bearing) exercise. Many of the women who come to my classes over age 50 might come in usually quite tight, but after a year of practice, they have amazing range of motion and better posture. Most discover at their physical that they are taller!

Zoebird - I had to skip yoga for a few months due to injury, and now I find my body is really tight (usually I'm very flexible.) I'm especially having really tight thigh muscles (back of thighs.) Do know of any postures that will loosen them up? I'm back to doing a normal routine daily but it's not going well - after 6 weeks I am seeing little improvement. Trying lots of gentle forward and backward bends, lunges, not working!
