My mother is in her early 60s, an introvert and has been beaten down in the last several years by unemployment/underemployment, ageism, etc. She is working now but I know the long commute just to have the job she has is stressful and probably gets her down even more.

We have never really gotten along but as I'm an only child I do try to make sure she continues to move along in life ok. I've been trying to think of something that would get the message to her to keep going and not give up on whatever it is she may want to do.

Anyone get Growing Bolder's magazine?

Or have any ideas to other magazines/books that might be a good idea for someone at that point in her life?
Thanks!

Hi Dhiana,

I've always been a fan of Barbara Sher's books, some of which are geared toward mature women. Depending on her frame of mind, she may enjoy "It's Only Too Late If You Don't Start Now: How to create your second life at any age."

Also, on the Growing Bolder site I stumbled across this book, which I just ordered from the library:
http://www.amazon.com/Second-Act-Careers-Profit-Passions-Semi-Retirement/dp/1607743825

Sounds interesting to me, even though I'm not yet considering retiring.

What is she passionate about? What does she love to do, or what could she teach others?

If she's convinced she has to stick with her current job, perhaps you could instead focus on things to do with that long commute. I learned Spanish when I had a 90-minute commute...

Good luck to your mom ---

I haven't heard of the book, but I have come across "Growing Bolder" on a PBS channel before and it was very interesting and very positive for those of us in the 50-60+ age category.

I have never been able to figure out what she is passionate about, she has never said nor has she volunteered when I've asked. While she is not a type A personality, she has placed her focus on her jobs to do well and I know she often exceeds expectations.

Interestingly enough she did ask me about learning Spanish...but it's for her job so she can speak with her Latino customers. I did receive some great suggestions from others here about good places for her to start learning :)

And nice to see you're back Sad Eyed Lady :)
