Hello everyone,
My happiness survey is finally ready! I would really appreciate you taking five minutes of your time to complete it.

And please feel free to share with people you know (including facebook for those who use it). The more responses I get the more accurate and interesting the data will be. Survey results will be available.

Awesome! Good luck. Please consider changing gender choices to include transgendered individuals.

Thank you redfox!

What would be the best term(s) for transgendered individuals? Just "transgendered"? Or should there be other options?

ETA: I tried to change the gender question and it will not allow it now that the survey is active. I apologize for that oversight. I should have caught that - I took a human sexuality class and know better.

I hope transgendered individuals will select the gender that they identify with. My apologies again.

Hi Watergoddess, on the survey it asked about accomplishments and body image but there wasn't a question asking are you happy? At least I don't remember seeing one! Chris

I took it, I just went with my gut on each answer and didn't overthink, but still took them seriously, and it took about 2 minutes. Good luck watergoddess!

Good luck, watergoddess. As someone with a degree in positive psychology, I enjoyed completing your survey. Thanks for contributing to happiness research!

Awww... thanks everyone. You guys are the best.

Tussie - you're right. I didn't ask "Are you happy?" I should have. I should have asked respondents to rate their happiness on a scale from 1-5. Duh!

Actually, what I should have done is post my questions here and ask for feedback before I activated the survey!!!

This is very cool watergoddess! I'll be anxious (in a good way) to see what your results show.

Geila

Gregg - I'm really excited to see what the results will show too. Thanks for taking it.

cdttmm - positive psychology is my favorite! How cool that you have a degree in it. If I were younger I would pursue it. Instead I'm getting my AA in psych and my BA in communications. Have you watched Shawn Achor's show on PBS? He's great.

I took it . It's very hard to have a "perfect" survey! Doesn't that help decide how to write the paper- analysis of the questions and what you would ask next time? Good luck. I hope you get LOTS of survey takers.

Continued thanks. And yes, the snafus will provide great material for my paper.

When I finish the project I'll do a summary post on the results. I'd also be happy to share the report with anyone interested.

:thankyou:

I kept waiting for a hard question....there wasn't one.
Would be neat to see your results and then maybe a control group from the first round to take more difficult level of questioning.

My degree required enough psych that I ended up with a minor in it.

Please remind us here to ask for results in June.

Just another thought to consider in your survey summary report, I was in a committed relationship but DH passed away recently. Part of my contentment is the satisfaction with my longterm marriage and wonderful teamwork for 47 years.
To answer 'uncommitted' felt wrong to me because I am still committed to him and that is not likely to change.

What's an AA in the education portion? I don't think we have that in Canada

Geila

Razz - my deepest condolences on the loss of your husband. I think you can state that you are in a committed relationship. Because emotionally, you are. I debated a long time on that question and really hesitated to use it. I personally don't care for it, but I decided not to let my personal feelings about it get in the way. Next time I'll go with my gut (or add other options besides yer or no). I also wish I had thought to put a section for feedback/comments at the end of the survey.

Float On - I really like your idea. Would you be interested in helping design the questions? Maybe cdttmm would give us a hand too. I think it would be really interesting.

Mighty Frugal - (every time I see your screen I think of Mighty Mouse flying thru the air! Did you ever watch that cartoon?)
An AA is a 2-year degree. Thanks for the question, I modified it on the survey.*

*I can modify the wording of a question or answer but I cannot change the answer options (ie, I can't add an option, only modify existing ones) or add or delete questions. If you guys see any questions or answers that could be better by modifying the wording please let me know. Maybe you can send me a private message so as not to give too much of the survey away for those who haven't taken it yet.

:thankyou:

p.s. I will remind everyone in June about the results.

Thank you for the opportunity. I love doing surveys---seems like the only time anyone cares about my opinion! LOL!

Note: On some of them, I wish there had been a fifth option: "Neither agree nor disagree." Just a thought.

haha Mighty Mouse-I never thought of that. No, that cartoon was a bit before my time (or maybe it wasn't aired in Canada?) I like to think of myself as a caped crusader. Fighting against high prices, fancy coffees and of course, salad spinners....

For the first time in approximately 50 years, I'm sitting here singing the theme song:

"Here.....I Come to Save the Dayyyyyy".

Thank you for the very early childhood memory. Actually, I think Mighty Mouse is the first cartoon hero I remember.

I always think of the theme song too! The cartoon must have been on a long time because I remember it at least into the early 80's.

Just a quick note to thank all of you who have completed the survey and to let you guys know that I'll probably start looking at the data tomorrow. So if you haven't done the survey yet, don't wait any longer! You won't want to miss out on being part of this super cool event. :) How's that for a sales pitch?

:thankyou:

Hi everyone,
I wanted to update you guys on the results of the survey. I'll keep it brief and simple.

I received 90 completed responses, with a good mix of male and female ratios and ages ranging from 18 to 79. Of the many factors that I looked at, four emerged as the most significant in relationship to happiness. They were (in order of significance):

1. Self-confidence
2. Being proactive
3. Having a sense of belonging
4. Gratitude

These four factors had the strongest positive correlation with happiness. There were other factors that were also significant, but none more so than these. Gender and relationship status had no correlation with happiness levels. I found the results very interesting because they indicate that our happiness levels are largely within our control. All of these are areas in which we have a good degree of influence.

I want to thank each of you who took the time to respond to the survey. I really enjoyed analyzing the data and presenting my findings to the class.

As a token of appreciation, I've attached a short video that I hope you will enjoy. Be sure to maximize your window and play it with sound!

How do we get to the results now that it is June 3rd?

Blackdog Lin

Thanks for posting your generalized results (and we were happy to help! :)). I wasn't surprised at the factors your poll showed - they all make perfect sense to me. Self-confidence, sure, and a sense of belonging.....I'd never quantified why I am able to be a happy person, in spite of, you know, s**t happening. Your poll results have given me something to think about.

And that video.....I had to bookmark it to watch later again and again. Such beauty. Thank you.
