Here's what was in our drive today......a turkey vulture on a deer head. No big deal. :~)

Then this one swooped down and yelled "There's not enough meat on that one, son", and they flew off together.

They are really beautiful. One of the reasons I liked visiting relatives who live in the South is the wildlife. I never knew when I would be able to see an alligator or wild pig. But, aside from the roadside peanut vendors, the vultures were the most abundant. Oh, now I am missing fresh peanuts, too.

I think they are beautiful too. Sometimes after our lower property floods, there are some things that die. One year, the turkey vultures hung around alot to eat those dead things. They roosted close to the house in some big spruce trees. It was so neat to see them start to fly in from all directions in the evening to sleep in the trees. Here is a picture I took of them that year, right outside my bathroom window. They were sunning themselves.

I have a great photo somewhere of a bunch of turkey vultures sitting on a sign at the lake that says "swim at your own risk". We have lots and lots of them here.

They are very quiet and mannerly birds. I don't believe I've ever heard a sound from them.

One of the coves I like to kayak at is close to a cove known for where our turkey vulture population roosts at night. They are a very social bird, you rarely see one alone. Its incredible to watch whate seems like thousands of them flying in to roost for the evening. Its also fun to watch them from the scenic overlook up the hill from my house - they love playing in the air currents at the dam.

Great pictures, CathyA. We don't have them here, though someone told me last week that one was spotted. I like seeing them when I visit my son in NC.

It might be even more interesting to speculate on why there was a deer's head out there....where was the deer? Something bigger than a turkey vulture hauled it away?

Thanks leslieann,
We had a big flood recently and the water from a close-by creek came almost up to our drive. Someone (an idiot), threw a deer carcass over the bridge late last Fall (after he killed and skinned it) and it was just hanging on some bushes. I'm thinking it probably fell apart, and eventually found its way close to the drive with the flood. We don't usually find them there. haha
