Paradise lot : two plant geeks, one-tenth of an acre and the making of an edible garden oasis in the city by Eric Toensmeier with contributions from Jonathan Bates.

Has anyone else read this book? I must say it is the most readable and fun book on permaculture I've come across.
Essentially, two guys are trying to grow as many types of perennial edible plants (leaning towards natives) creating a food forest, on a small lot, with poor soil, in a difficult climate (Massachusetts.)

Of course I question some of their design decisions, but the gist of it very good. I had to keep reminding myself that they were experimenting, because some of their choices just seem nutty.

I also think if it had been two women, the garden would have been very different. Those banana trees...

I have read it, gardenarian, and liked it as well. I've used their plant list to order several new species this year, to see if I can get them to grow here (like perennial arugula). We're very into edible perennials.

We're very into edible perennials.

That, IMO, is one of the most fascinating segments of the plant kingdom. We're working on learning more and growing more as well. To the book, I thought it was very entertaining and fairly well thought out. For a space that is a wild hair work in progress, that is.

Gardenarian, the thought that it would be very different if the authors had been two women cracked me up at first, but upon reflection I have no doubt you are right. DW and I have been planting our garden this week (which is to say that I've been planting and she's been supervising). It has been a most unusual combination, think of French lavender and ghost peppers. One thing is for certain, the critters that share our permaculture are going to be a diverse community!
