I have a large population of family members living in all parts of Oklahoma City. After the storms yesterday all of them, and all of us from elsewhere, were able to post on Facebook and within a few hours all the family was accounted for. Love it or hate it Facebook did provide a way for us to do that in a few hours where years ago it would probably have taken days. Disclaimer, we didn't have any kind of family phone tree set up which would have made phones considerably more efficient. Anyway, it was good to know they are safe and mind boggling to see the pictures of the damage.

There is that aspect to FB but I still have not activated the account that I set up. Glad that all are safe.

I have to agree. My cousin in Moore finally gathered his little family together late yesterday evening (one daughter was at one of the schools hit, wife working at the hospital) and he was able to let all of us know they were together and camping out in their damaged home.

Good to hear your family is okay. I myself went to a "facebook wedding" of a family friend this weekend. After almost 40 years apart he was reunited (via facebook) with his girlfriend from when they were teenagers. The groom spent a portion of his wedding speech thanking Mark Zuckerberg.

Like any tool, FB is awesome for many uses. I love it for the connectivity I get with so many! Glad everyone's people are ok...

Agreed. Glad to hear all are safe. I live on an island that frequently loses power, only clears most roads by waiting for the snow to melt, and generally has several days every year when everyone hunkers down. And when we do, Facebook becomes the commons. We make sure everyone is fine. Those who need help are more likely to get it. Generally at times like those we use it to know we are not alone. That is precious.

Glad to her that everyone was safe and that FB was able to provide you with a way of knowing that fairly quickly. And it sounds like others are using it in the same way with a lot of success. I don't use FB in the format it was meant for, I have many creative and inspiring pages that I really like looking at every day, another form of Pinterest for me....

Like Tussiemussies, I use it more like Pinterest. I get updates from scholarly journals like Who Forted (Fortean mysteries) and Phantoms and Monsters, and recipes from the likes of DJ Foodie. I have no Facebook friends (oh, the horrors).
