View Full Version : leftover shampoo?
I have shampoo, half of a big bottle, that we are not going to use. My oldest got her own shampoo for her long hair, i use shampoo to make my gray hair shiny and the other 2 kids have dredlocked their hair so they don't use shampoo. Do you think you can put this in the hand soap pump and use it that way? Maybe watered down? Or is there another way to use it up?

What kind of shampoo have you found that make gray shiny? I've been on the hunt for something like that. Does it work?
I use shampoo I don't care for to clean the shower or toilet. It's especially effective at removing soap scum.
You could also donate it to a homeless shelter or women's shelter. They always welcome things like that.
It's also good for shaving your legs!

Even once they're opened?
Clean your shower with it.

FlyLady even recommends this! ;-)

I don't imagine so. My guideline is if I would not want it, I won't assume that someone who is poor would. Leftovers seems undignified.

I would still ask. I know the shelters here do take opened bottles of toiletries.

You can use it for hand washables or even in the washing machine. Shampoo is designed to remove body oils, dead skin - the same sort of stuff that gets on clothes.

I've always had a hard time with this point, because I can honestly envision it going one of two ways. One, like you say, that if I don't want a partially used item, why should I assume someone else would, and how would someone who needed that feel to see that the best someone could do to help is some half-used castoff shampoo? But two, if I were in a situation of poverty and that's an opportunity to wash my hair, or save money on shampoo - money I can use for food or other items - maybe I take it, even if the bottle is opened?
I have posted opened items on CL, once it was half-used perfumes, once it was opened ingredients for making chai tea from scratch, several times it was partial bags of dog foods that we had to abandon, and I had people filling my inbox to get a hold of those items. That's the tack I take with opened things now. I offer them up on CL and let individuals approach me if they are something they want and if I get no takers, I figure out something else or they go in the garbage. Then I don't have to worry about foisting unwanted items on anyone.

This is what I use it for.

Hi ZG - I wanted to bump this back to the top. What's the name of the gray shiny shampoo you like from Sally's & Walgreens? Let us know, I'd like to check it out too. Thanks!!!
Shampoo, even the really cheap stuff, is great to use showering. I don't like bar soap, so I use shampoo. If you have Especially Sensitive Skin, which I don't, this may not work or you, but it works for me. But of course, you can always follow with a body oil or lotion of some kind.
Do you have any dogs? I use shampoo that doesn't work for me as the dog shampoo.
As I have said on here before I use it for handwashing tights and undies.
