I dropped off my son's finals this morning and saw the counselor who has been working with us. I found myself getting emotional walking up to the school and took a minute to figure it out. I think it is really about belonging. My son was doign well for most of the year, I was starting to make a few connections to his band teacher (that is his talent) and think about doing PTO next year. Now he is unlikely to go to a regular school and if he does it may be a different one again. My kids will not attend church with me (yes I know teenagers are not likely to), we have no family friends left in state, one out of state family. So the school meant a lot more to me than his grades or just social connections for him. I would have really liked him staying there and being in band and going to his concerts. He played in the band for the school play this year and I brought goodies for the practice dinners, it was nice. He doesn't want to audition for the all city band or other music groups.
We do have our extended family, thank goodness for them being pretty sane and generally nice people.
