Now, I wonder how long before such great choices will become available in Canada?

Tempting for about 45 seconds. I want net access, maybe two or three times a year, but currently call a relative at a computer to search for something. Not sure I could justify the price, maybe if I could use some other phone (get someones hand me down), as I am currently under $60 a year.

EDIT: One thing about his article, bothers me. "The company indicates that if you go consistently overboard on data use, you couldbe booted from the family" which goes against the term UNLIMITED, which there have been lawsuits with various service providers (phone and internet) about.
If it isn't unlimited, don't falsely advertise it as such.>:(

My husband and I currently pay about $60/mo each for unlimited text and talk including fees, and any data is extra (I don't do much net access on my phone, and don't plan to). This is a worthwhile experiment for me, so I signed up. If anyone else has, or does, maybe we can compare notes. I plan to keep it side-by-side with my existing service for a month and really test it out.

yea you can definitely beat that monthly price with prepaid plans on dumb phones, though the monthly may not be that much lower. Someone there said they have *unlimited* voice and text prepaid for $25 a month though, and those phones are cheap, it would take years of phone use to get up to the difference between a cheap prepaid phone and a $259 phone.

The only drawback was that I’d have to buy myself one of the required $259 Motorola Defy smartphones to do it.

wowza, that's a lot of money - $259 phone. But yea if I got a free hand me down or something ... might be worth it.

They have a plan too that is (I think) 29./mo and then the phone is around a hundred bucks. For unlimited talk, text and data, if you feel you NEED all those things, it's still a good deal over any of the other carriers, and the company is pretty neat. Good ethic, good way of expressing itself, nice little friendly-company niche, for those who prefer that. We'll see though.

Republic Wireless has dropped the bit about "too much data use."
They are coming out with new phones soon, and we plan to try it out. Will report back.

Thanks for the update. I expect their companies lawyer mentioned something about that as well. (and how having that out there in print, could cause an increase in damages)
