View Full Version : Would you?
Found a nice single-wide mobile/manufactured/trailer home way out in the sticks of Georgia. 10 miles to the closest Wal-mart, Dollar General. Good price, block foundation, acre of land, all good. Except, across the street.... registered sex offender. Conviction was 13 years ago, none since.
Would you buy? Why or why not?

Do you have kids? A wife? Is it a good possibility you'll have some in the future? Is this the "forever" property?
Personally, rural Georgia is not a place I would enjoy living in, even if the neighbor was Jimmy Carter. But that's me.

Well, I lived in the country for a couple years and loathed it, so I know that lifestyle isn't for me...but assuming it is for you...
Sex offenders have low rates of rehabilitation and high rates of recidivism. As a woman, no I wouldn't move across the street from a sex offender, especially somewhere so isolated. Yesterday I was jogging in a usually pretty busy park area, but I was the only one silly enough to be out there in the heat/humidity and I got cat called/whistled/honked at. I'm sure the guy was just a jerk, not a rapist, but with no one else on the track it did make me a little hyper aware that something bad could theoretically happen and I should stay abreast of my surroundings. I would never feel safe living so close to a sex offender. I am not particularly parinoid either, there is a cheap extended stay motel half a mile from my house with sex offenders living in it.
Also, I don't know what the crime was, but if you are planning on having or do have kids that is another thought to consider.
Now, if the charge was some sort of statutory rape thing where this guy was 19 and the girlfriend was 15, I would be open to reconsidering my answer, otherwise I would stay away.

No, I would never, ever consider it.....
Sex offender, stay away. I treated a few in my psychoanalytic practice in NYC and they are usually multiply addicted, not just to sex, and have other antisocial features. It is very hard for them for sex-offending behavior to become something they develop a conscience about--those who prey on kids I've noticed often see it as good for the kids. Yuck.

If depends on the crime. There are some 18 years olds who are on sex offender lists because they had 15 year old class mates in high school as girl or boy friends. Some people are on there for public urination.
Was it a case like the Florida teen Kaitlyn Hunt?

I'd live across the street from her any day.
No, but I wouldn't want to live in a mobile home in rural Georgia anyway. Being in an isolated area with a sex offender across the road isn't a good spot either. I'll pass on this property.

14 year old daughter. No.
It would depend on what the person was convicted of, as others mentioned. Since we're a middle aged gay couple with no kids I wouldn't be too concerned unless violence was involved, but that's just us. If we had kids or one of us was female I'd be waaay more cautious about it.

My elderly neighbor let some passer-by squat on his land, in return for helping out on his 5 acre plot. Since he was out of work, I also hired him to help out with a project. I knew something was wrong when he started telling me he was NOT a child sex offender, even though the cops thought he was. Next thing he's storming around the area, brandishing a pistol, and threatening the elderly neighbor. Turns out he had other problems - schizophrenia, etc.
My advice - NO.
It would depend on the nature of the offense, and the proximity of old mine shafts and abandoned rock quarries...
It definitely depends on the nature of his offense, for sure. Can you find that out?

Be aware that many different offenses can get a person on the list. Anything from being a 19 year old who dated a 17 year old and someone made a stink about it to rape to pedophilia to being too drunk to remember not to whip is out wherever you were when you needed to pee and some kids were there.
Can't really make an informed decision without knowing the nature of the offense. Does GA have the details online?

Would you buy? Why or why not?No. Not because of the sex offender but because it's out in the sticks. I had a brief stint living on some land out in the sticks and it wasn't for me at all. Lots of people I known have that dream of being off alone far from everything but the reality of it isn't for everyone.
