I wish I could talk to you intelligently about computers and how to fix them. I probably would know more if I were forced into it, but as it is, DH handles that stuff.
First we had internet through the phone, then we got a Sierra Wireless thingamabob (always gave us trouble), then we got our own WiFi device.....which has worked out wonderfully.

Anyhow......a couple days ago, all of a sudden we couldn't access any browser. DH did everything possible to figure out what the problem was. I can't even tell you what all he did, since I'm so computer stupid. I'm pretty good at troubleshooting lots of things and think I'd be good at this, if I took a course. Anyhow..........the only other thing mis-behaving was the Norton 360. DH couldn't even get into it.

To make a long, boring story short..........DH found out that sometimes Norton can actually BE the problem. He turned it off and we could immediately get into everything. But.....now he has to figure out how to protect us, so we're using his laptop in the meantime. But he had to go cut grass, so its all on hold.
Have any of you ever had this kind of trouble with Norton? Apparently it wasn't a firewall issue, but rather a problem with the virus protection. (did I say it right? hahaha).

Norton is famous for that. It comes installed as a trial in so many computers that when someone used (thankfully I don't mess with Windows anymore), to ask me to set it up, I uninstalled it (and other trialware).
I recommended and my dad uses AVG (free program, or you can buy as well). He doesn't completely follow my recommendations, but my mom is computer illiterate enough to get herself in trouble. For a backup to it, there is an online antivirus, that I have used. (when I ran Windows, I only had a virus once, and it attacked the antivirus that was installed).

McAfee and Norton have done a great job creating utterly bloated and disruptive software.

If you have a Microsoft Windows operating system, then protect it with Microsoft Security Essentials or (under Windows 8) Microsoft Defender.

Thanks TMS and BUU.
Something that has become so important to functioning/communicating these days can be so complicated!

What he said! I used Microsoft Security Essentials for the past two or so years until upgrading my OS to Windows 8, which has another version of the same software, Microsoft Defender, built in. If you're running Windows XP or Windows 7, you can get MSE for free here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security-essentials-all-versions
