View Full Version : Just too many fireworks.
True, I'm am different than most people, and like different things than most people, so maybe that's why I'm asking this. But why do there need to be so many fireworks?
After the 4th, I'm hearing about injuries, people's houses burning, people injured from explosions going off too soon in the wrong direction, people not cleaning up all their crap from their own fireworks.
I mean really. Do we really need to use all these resources, pollute the air and create garbage? Just like everything else, its all excess. It ticks me off.
AGREED! Our neighborhood loves fireworks. The 4th & Chinese New Year are the two craziest times, and they last for a week. I am tired of being sleep deprived, and my cats are twitchy.
Seems to me that all of our traditional holidays have gone overboard with expected activities. I agree on the fireworks expecially in these times of drought here.
Fireworks are illegal in my county, because of the extreme high fire danger here.
So I'm spending this week responding to dozens of illegal fireworks calls, and keeping the whole place from burning down. Grrrr.....
I used to hate fireworks when I was little because of the noise, but now I love watching "sanctioned" ones--my DS had an apartment with an amazing view of the Manhattan skyline for about three years, and he always invited us to see the Macy's fireworks from his deck.... unbelievable!
But that's a far cry from the drunk neighbors in the back field igniting who-knows-what. I'm not crazy about that. I'm glad fireworks are illegal in my area.
We drove to the next town over (about 20 miles) and watched a small show over the Columbia River. It was marvelous, breezy and only slightly crowded. Works for me!
You know we don't read about all the evenings that went just as planned and everyone had a good time, because there's no 'shock value' in a good time. :)

Thank you! We were often haying during fireworks season. Scary indeed.

In my area, a lot of people buy fireworks and set them off in their backyards. That's where most of the injuries happen, because people don't think about what they are doing. Fireworks explode. It's the only thing they are designed to do. So maybe it's not a good idea to give them to small children, or handle them after you've had a few beers. I don't know if it's excess. I'd call it stupidity.
The large fireworks displays that are held by cities and towns tend to be safer, because they are worried about liability, so they take precautions.
Fireworks are popular with the ghetto crowd here so popping and banging going on until 1 am, beginning on July 3 and running through to the end of this weekend, is the norm.
Yesterday I drove down one street where all of the evidence of firework littered the street. This group doesn't believe in picking up trash.
Fortunately this group of dogs seem to be relatively ok with the noise. We used to have one bulldog who was terrified of storms and fireworks, and then adding in the air show that drones on several times a day during this period--it was very hard on her.
But I don't know that there are "illegal" fireworks because my state is fairly lax about what is allows to be sold, Iowa and Illinois folks drive in here to buy the stuff.

Though the biggest noisemakers have moved away, our neighborhood also seems to love their ordnance. Fortunately, they're pretty good about keeping their messes off the streets and sidewalks. It's been years since I picked spent shells out of my yard (firebug neighbor; long story). Sounds like the crowd around you didn't bother looking for the trash because it was dark out when the fireworks went out. >8)
Big shoutout to my neighbors--since fireworks have been illegal, we've had very little shelling in the area. When they were legal, years ago, my neighbor across the street used to go out with his kids and set some off with a hose and bucket of water at the ready--nothing very dangerous. I'm fine with the sponsored events.
When we lived in Tucson I was seriously concerned about fires every July 4. We used to go out of town and I always wondered if our house would be there when we returned.
We went to a municipal display this year and I was thinking that if it had been half as long I would have been equally impressed with it.
Overall, I can do without most of them. A good friend is in charge of emergency services for the major hospital group here. He told me that when our fair state relaxed the law this year on the maximum size of ordinance that could be sold his staff immediately cancelled any extra vacation time over this weekend. According to the news report I heard this morning that was a very good idea. How stupid is that?
On the other side, we have two neighbors that both love to throw lavish parties for the 4th complete with professionally done, and quite impressive, displays. Both can afford to do it so why not? They used to compete, but now both hire the same company and coordinate their displays. We can go to either party or just sit in our driveway and get a show that far exceeds any of the municipal displays in the area. That's pretty cool.
I guess when so many people use the same things, I think about the energy/resources used to make them all, the trash that is left for the dump, and the effect it has on air quality, etc.
Sure........everything ever thought up to entertain might be "fun".........the question is, what are the consequences for millions of people "enjoying" it?
Last year we were in a very bad drought. We have about 28 acres in woods. I was very afraid of fires. Fortunately, they cancelled all the fireworks.
Its like everything else.........too many people wanting too many things, and not giving the consumption of it all any thought.
We have neighbors who shoot fireworks on July 4th from 8 p.m. To 12. I hate it mostly because my animals are upset for hours and I can't sleep. I love the municipal fireworks be we can't go because I won't leave the animals when they are so upset.
I live in a Vietnamese community where fireworks and especially firecrackers are king. It get crazy for days before and after all holidays even though fireworks are illegal in my city and carry a thousand dollar fine. I also live only 15 mikes or so from Disneyland so hear their fireworks every night.
I haven't shot off any fireworks personally in over 20 years. It's just not something I'm interested in doing anymore. But back in my youth, after I got my driver's license, I can remember every year driving with my friends to the city limits (you could go in pretty much any direction) where there were always firework stands in the weeks leading up to July 4th. We would get great big bags of them and shoot them off constantly in the week leading up to Independence Day. Remembering my past I try to have patience when people in my neighborhood are shooting them off all weekend long.
Our dogs get upset so we take them camping on the 4th. I can understand that day but when it's nightly for a week, come on. One of the few good things about last summer was everyone, and I mean everyone was freaked about fire, and all the lakes were down so even the folks who had lakefront property had fields instead and dared not shoot off fireworks. Most of even the municipal displays were canceled last year. This year one of the professional municipal displays nearby started a fire. Oops.

You still live in Nebraska, right? I didn't know the state had 'relaxed the law' on ordinance size......that definitely explains why the neighborhood explosives seemed so much louder and intense this year than in the past. Stupid move, Nebraska. Allow a bunch of drunk rednecks to buy fireworks that had been illegal in the past (illegal for a reason) and let them off in densely populated areas that are still effected by the drought. Ugh.
