My DH was about to start a custom install of a high end, hand built interior staircase in a two million dollar waterfront home, and he got called back to the shop because... the deposit check bounced. And the homeowner blamed it on the business. Seriously?!? We live very close to the bone, and never bounce checks. I was astonished when he told me. I guess this just blew open my concept of wealthy people. Bounced checks??!!?? Don't they have people to handle that kinda stuff?

Ooh, be careful--can he bail on the job, or get paid in advance or cash or certified check?

My husband is an organist and somebody once bounced a check for playing their wedding! He laughed and wrote it off as a tithe, but what a way to start a marriage.

Some people just don't pay attention. In the case of "blaming it on the business" it could be the guy was expecting some accounts receivable to be in by this time.. When you have a business there are always a lot of plates in the air and sometimes one falls. Not to excuse irresponsible financial practices, but it's not as straightforward as getting a paycheck. But if he has a second home on the water, he might be the "all show no substance" type with a big house and not a penny in the bank.

But I think he just wasn't careful enough and doesn't really care about the $30 OD fee.

i think you're right about the fee. And, the homeowner blamed it on the bank of the business my DH works for! She said that obviously, the builders bank did something wrong... (???) Right....

Lucky for him, there is a client manager to handle these sorts of things, so he doesn't have to. But sheesh.
