View Full Version : quick question re: internal application

Hi everyone,
I am applying for an internal/lateral job at my employer. I was told that even though it's within the library (where I now work), I still have to go through the online application process. It doesn't differ for internal candidates vs. external.

The thing that is tripping me up a bit is: the cover letter. Do I address it to anyone in particular? I am on a first-name basis with the HR director, but I feel funny saying "dear Mr. Smith" as if I don't know him. Or is "dear John" worse? Do I direct it to "hiring manager"? I mean, the whole thing just seems so silly and awkward since I *already work here*!

Just looking for a quick response on this one. Thank you!

Aha...thank you!

I am kind of nervous about the whole thing. I feel super self-conscious, even though I know all the people in the library, the HR director, etc.

Sweating over the cover letter!

It does seem odd when you already know everybody but they have to look at everybody as if they don't. Being informal in this case would look unprofessional. Good luck!
