I had decided that this was a good move for us about a month ago, and DH told me to go for it. I've just procrastinated for no good reason until today, when I finally went ahead and did it. It was as easy as buying something from Amazon, and I've certainly proven myself capable of spending money online! I went with the VTSMX account, which is one of the total stock market funds, and this one only requires a $3000 initial investment. I didn't know the routing number for our ING/Capital One Account, but I logged into that account and the routing number was right there. So I'm pleased to have accomplished this.
Well Done. Now you know more than you did before. Yay!

Right, the only way to ever learn something is sometimes just to do it in small and imperfect ways at first. So one may not know much about investing but they can open an index fund to start. I'm not terribly interested in investing anyway (ugh like pulling teeth even if I know very well I *should* be more interested) - so that's why I'm tempted to hire someone, but that's me.

I've had one open for several years, but hadn't been able to make any deposits after the initial opening. Am happy to report that some negotiations at work have enabled me to make % deposits every payday! I feel a tinge of relief that had been missing whenever I thought about actually retiring. Still think I will NEED to work forever, but this helps.
Congrats to you!!!!!

Congrats! I decided years ago that Roths were the way to go for us. I always knew we'd be poorer in retirement than before, and wanted the taxes already paid on those monies. Never cared whether we were gonna pay more or less taxes depending on our income, I just wanted to have tax free savings to draw upon for our later years.
Of course, now I worry that the government will change the rules. They've done it before. But it's been the best I can/could do to help our retirement years.
The $3000 has already grown to $3031. I know that isn't really significant, but it still feels like affirmation!
As we all know, past performance is no indicator of future performance. Nonetheless, you've gotten an average annual return of ~26% so far!
