I just thought I'd mention that the American Express card from Fidelity Investments earns 2% cash back on all purchases. It is free money for those of you who use credit cards. We try to put as many bills as we can on it and pay if off in full every month for the cash back.

I usually get a 3-5% discount from local merchants with a cash purchase...

One of our local gas stations gives a discount for cash.

Good for you guys on the cash front, but for purchases at places like Costco and bills like electricity, car insurance and health insurance, the 2% can add up to basically free money.

I agree try2befrugal, every bit of cash back helps. We are currently doing an overhaul of a fixer upper house, and if I can negotiate a cash discount, I do, otherwise I want the cashback.

Also, when I make an online purchase I always google the store and then cashback because a lot of stores participate in referral programs through sites like ebates or fatwallet, and that cash back is in addition to any credit card cash back.

I just read that AmEx will be teaming up w/ Wells Fargo for new cards beginning mid-2014. I'm dreading tellers pushing this card on me to the point that I'm considering ditching WF altogether and moving everything to the local credit union.

2 percent cash back is good, but if you compare credit cards (http://www.myrateplan.com/creditcards/) from AmEx I think they have offers that go as high as 6 percent on supermarket purchases (and maybe gas?).

Either way, can't knock the free cash!
