View Full Version : Hydrogen peroxide
I have been using this for many different applications around the house lately, after reading a column of its uses. I use the household 3% solution. What do you use it for? Here are my recent new discoveries...
I have Green Feet inserts in my shoes, modified by my podiatrist. I took out a pair that had gotten grungy & sprayed them down w/HP. They bubbled and bubbled! I then scrubbed them with my nail brush, rinsed & left them to dry. This morning, clean, & no more feet smell!
I'm now soaking our toothbrushes in HP once a week, overnight. It then goes down the bathroom sink drain to keep it unblocked. I tried it as mouthwash, and it was weird! I've read that it does help whiten teeth over time.
Got all the long term, intransigent stains out of our toilet bowls after repeatedly draining them of water & soaking them in a 3% solution of HP.
Unblocked both a sink drain & shower drain after repeated use of HP & baking soda.
HP goes into the washing machine, in the bleach drawer, to boost detergent. Also in the dishwasher, which has helped open blocked drains & the dishes are getting cleaner.
I ordered four gallons from Amazon. We subscribe to Prime, so no delivery fee. I got this quantity for $34! I think it will last me till year's end, we'll see. I am very impressed with its cleaning powers.

My dog eats socks. Sometime I don't find out until they are fully processed but when I do witness the consumption the best way to recover the sock is by force dosing some hydrogen peroxide. If that sounds excessive, just know that intestinal blockage can be very bad for dogs or your wallet. So you can add that to the list of useful applications.

Wow. Good to know... If it's effective, it sounds just right. 'Cause, yeah, intestinal blockage sounds dreadful. How the heck did you discover this remedy?

I use it sometimes to clean the counters in kitchen and bath.
We used it at the bank 20 some years ago because it was the only cleaner that wouldn't streak the black counters and kept dust at bay.
I'm going to try it mixed with apple cider vinegar on my son's head - he's been struggling with a bit of dandruff.

I have heard of it's cleaning power on grungy cookie pans and a few other things, but I would like to try some of the things you have done. It's nice hearing it from someone who has used it. Thanks for posting about this....

I used it to clear up an infected gum when I didn't have the money to go to a dentist. It was a last resort thing, and it worked. Just rinsed (soaked...) for a couple of minutes at a time, several times a day. I was getting really concerned, so I did it a lot.
It works better than plain cold water for removing blood from clothes. Saturate and rub-scrub it between your knuckles.
Caution on the mouthwash use, my dental hygenist says it's too harsh for routine us on gums.

Ooo! Good one...

Ironic that ToomuchStuff mentions crime scenes... A grandkid of my parents' across the hall neighbor had been running on the pool deck, slipped and crashed through the glass door. He was bleeding a lot when he ran into the hall as we were coming home, so dad dragged him into their apartment to grab something to put pressure on his bleeding wrist, a trail of blood pouring out of him all over the white carpet. The cop that came along with the ambulance recommended peroxide. White carpet saved!
I'm not too surprised at any of these suggestions since 1) I'd read somewhere that it does have a bleaching effect, and 2) all those various "oxy" cleaners like the one Billy Mays used to advertise contain H2O2 as their main ingredient.
Hydrogen Peroxide is great for breaking up impacted ear wax.
I forgot this one but back in '84 when I was working in a backpacking camping ministry in West Virginia and I came down with strep throat and no way to get off the mountain and to a Dr. Our med. person had me gargle with apple cider and peroxide several times a day. It got better and the swollen glands went down.
I am loving these replies!
It is wonderful for keeping your gums healthy. I fight gum disease, and mine has been so much better since I started rinsing my mouth with a tiny glass of half hydrogen peroxide and half water mixed together. My dentist was very impressed with how well my gums looked at my last appt. I swish it around in my mouth for several seconds after brushing my teeth before going to bed.
I keep my toothbrush soaking in a small glass spice jar filled with it. I use it for cleaning and disenfecting, go through a bottle a week.

I've been putting it in the rinse aid compartment.

When we were small, if we cut ourselves, our mom would always wash it out with hydrogen peroxide. We loved it because unlike iodine, it did not sting, and we liked to watch it bubble.
The other day I used it on our dog--she had these weird skin reaction from the bug bites, and I washed her with soap and scrubbed the area, then poured the apple cider peroxide on and it looks great now.

Actually, our dental hygienist said to use it for gums specifically. But like others have stated - 50-50 solution and it goes a long way so you do not need too much. We use it now instead of mouthwash as it is relatively inexpensive.

I use to get split skin between some toes - gross I know. Some HP applied with a cotton ball once or twice a day seem to make them heal up quicker than anything else I tried.

Hydorgen peroxide was a general all purpose disinfectant that we kept around the farm to rinse off cuts on people and animals but my doctor recently told me not to use it on wounds at it not only kills the bad bacteria but the good bacteria as well so we no longer use it for that purpose. I used a tooth whitener product that contained hydorgen proxide and it turned my tongue black, quit using the product and my tongue went back to normal. I gave a TBS of hydrogen peroxide (per vet) to my dog to make her vomit when she at some Decon.
Mix hydrogen peroxide with baking soda in coffee carafe (or insulated coffee mugs/thermoses) and let soak for a while. They will come out shiny and clean. When DH brings his 10+ year-old Starbucks insulated coffee mug into Starbucks and asks them to fill it, he often gets comments about how unusually clean it is.
