Once again, we're in a near-drought situation. We had a severe drought last summer, but fortunately, it rained alot this spring. But now we haven't had rain in about 2 months or more. I have to water the garden every other day, the back yard (flowers/herbs/bushes) on the alternate day, and tonight I watered about 6 of our new/small white pines out in the field. One of them already died.
Its easier to carry milk gallon jugs with water than it is to drag the hose out hundreds of feet, through poison ivy.........but they still aren't getting enough. I have lots of trees and perennials and bushes that I planted in the Spring of 2012, and I don't want to lose them. I don't understand this. I thought Mother Nature liked me. :~)
I hope you're all having better luck with weather than we are.

Hope you do get some soon!!! Hauling that water out to the trees etc. doesn't sound so great....

Thanks Tussiemussies........actually I should have said I take it out there on my golf cart..........but its still hard with my arthritic body to fill all those jugs, etc.
I wouldn't be able to do it at all without my trusty steed........the golf cart!

No suck luck here either. With 100+ everyday, things are really drying up quickly. We are only allowed to water once a week so on that day, I probably spend at least 2-3 hours dragging the hose around just trying to keep things alive. I also save water in a bucket from household chores to water certain plants in between. Seems like it was once so easy back when it used to rain occasionally.

Man, it opened up in Seattle today. Likely ruined the blackberry harvest, dammit all... Very unseasonable too.

I said that Monday and Tuesday we got 3" of rain within 2 hours, wind, trees/limbs down, power outages. 'Ask and ye shall receive'.....I guess I should have qualified my request as to amount and how it was to be received. Glad for it anyhouw.

The weather recently is really strange. Some places, not too far from here, probably got too much rain. Its really curious why things are so compartmentalized.
Our ground is still hard and cracked from last year's drought, in spite of the good rains we had in the spring. I think some of my garden problems this year were from the ground being so hard. But in the spring, we had so much rain that when we needed to plant, we couldn't till the soil because of its wetness and just had to dig small trenches to plant seeds/plants. The plants did okay until the roots met that hardpan soil. Hopefully this Fall, we'll be able to amend the soil and really till it up. But you never know...........it might be too wet!!

This has been a year of either too much or not enough when it comes to rain. We're back to the not enough after having floods in early August. My MIL and BIL are due in from SC tonight. They've had way too much rain all summer in SC and guess what is finally in our forecast? A slight chance of rain.

No rain to speak of here in the past month or more, after a wet spring. Temps over 100* this week and into the weekend. Blea. Slight chance Saturday night and cooler Sunday. Come on cold front!!!

I'm sitting here hearing thunder. On the radar its right over us, in red and yellow. So where's the rain???????????

Noting the time and date of your post, I can tell you where the rain was, CathyA. It was here, hard downpour for approx. 15 minutes. The rain of a few days ago greened up the lawns, everyone mowed before yesterdays rain. Lookin' good here.

Me too (Dang, I wish it would rain!). But guess we're never satisfied. Four weeks ago all we were saying was "Dang, I wish it would quit raining!" We got 21" in 15 days, unheard of in July/August in our part of the country. And then it did indeed.....quit. And we're back to normal, droughty and wishing for some rainfall.

The good news is I'm sick and tired of picking the garden, and the lack of water on it will hasten the day I don't have to go pick, and then deal with the pickings.....(I picked 14 lbs. of okra yesterday morning, it took me an hour. Droughty doesn't seem to faze the okra at all. And it isn't selling like I think it should be!)

We need rain too in the Sierra. We have been having so much smoke from the Rim we can not go out or open windows. We do not have A/C. We are about 20 to 30 miles from the fire as the crow flys. We went down to Angels Camp today to watch a movie in an A/C theater to get out of the smoke.

Well, here it is Sept. 7 and still no rain. We have a slight chance of rain tomorrow. Yeah right. Its NEVER going to rain again. well........that's what it feels like.
I have to spend so much time watering everything that I don't want to die.
Fortunately, the garden did okay, in spite of the drought........thanks to ground water......

CathyA, please come and take some of our rain. We are getting pounded......2 inches in the last 30 minutes. Also, at least one bout of heavy rain every day for the past six weeks. Where is my nice arid Western climate? My dry, sunny Indian Summer? :)

I wish you could share it with me Pug. I'm thinking we'll get inundated with rain this Fall, when we need to take care of so many things on the property. You just never know what's going to happen. I hope all that rain didn't hurt your garden.

Every day this September, coastal moisture moves our way, makes a lot of noise and then moves around the city. Still no rain here...

It had been a long, hot dry spell for us, but we got just over an inch last night. It was for the most part a gentle rain. No wind, a little bit of thunder. I sat on the (covered) back deck and practiced guitar for about 3 hours. My dog crashed so hard at my feet that the thunder didn't even stir her. It was heavenly. Note to self: hang a hammock for just such nights!

Sounds wonderful Gregg!
A county south of here got 3" last night, but we got Zip, nada, nil. We have another chance tonight, but I'm not holding my breath. Its all very strange. and its supposed to be about 95 today. Then Friday morning its supposed to be in the 40's!
There just doesn't seem to be enough humidity to get a shower going. (Lots of showers indoors.....but nothing outside!).

I love those days where there is a gentle rain all day, and mild thunder. We haven't had one of those in several years. They used to be fairly common.

Went to see a creek near my house the other day. It was nearly dry. This is not good.
The forecast is calling for t-storms later tonight and tomorrow...but it seems like they're always in the forecast and it rarely happens. An occasional rainfall is not enough to maintain the water table, either.

Seems like the ground is dryer this year than last, when we were in a severe drought. I think the heavy rains in the spring helped alot. But our ground is cracked everywhere. Just glad the trees have mostly deep roots.
Funny how some weeds seem to love dry conditions.........like the goldenrod, and all the invasive vines.

We would push our weather east if we could! Every creek and river is flooding right now. Yay for raised beds though-my garden will be fine, and probably overproductive in a week or two.

Our community garden is under 6" of water in spots.....wild!
