What would you do if someone offered to drive you to and from work, because they knew you hated driving and were often late getting into work--but they picked you up late all the time?

I find it very difficult when someone is doing me a "favor" to be critical.

I have been getting a round-trip ride to work, for the above reason (I don't really like to drive, and the timing of my shift makes it impossible to use public transporation) but also because I am saving a $30 a month parking fee. However, my ride is late all the time picking me up. I've tried asking nicely. I don't know what the problem is. Today, said person apparently took a nap and either didn't set their alarm or ignored it. I ended up having to call to ask "where are you?"

I don't mean to be a witch or anything. But is it too much to ask this individual to be on time? This has turned into such a hot spot with me that I feel like now my entire evening is ruined.

I hate to pay the $30, but I'm wondering if I'm paying $30 in aggravation.

Edit: Perhaps I should simply keep cab fare in my wallet at all times.

I don't have any patience at all with chronically late people. How long has this person been giving you rides?

After the 2nd or 3rd time of the person picking me up late, I wouldn't have taken any more rides from them.

I have to ask, as I'm curious: what does your employer say about you often being late to work?

I'd say pay the $30 - the aggravation factor is definitely not worth the savings.

frugalone, if you had been paying a taxicab or a limo service to get to work and they were pathologically late, you'd fire them, right? Find someone else to ride with or pony up the $30 a month. Being late apparently serves your driver in some way. As the dependent on this driver, and especially if you are not paying for the ride, you are not going to be able to change that.

Ditto Lainey & SteveinMN.

You tried a carpool. It didn't work. Stop carpooling.
Sanity is definitely worth $30 a month, that's only $1/day to never have to think about this again.
(now grated that doesn't factor in gas & wear&tear on car- but still worth it, if you have it)
Hopefully a better carpool situation will present itself.

Sorry I wasn't clear. I'm not actually being late to work. I'm usually early, or just "on time." It's the after-work problem that is the late pick-up.

I have spoken to the driver one more time about this. If it continues, I'm going to have to pony up the $30 and that's that. You're right. It is only $1 a day.

Well, you say that you hate driving and are often late to work when driving yourself...

Also, are you paying them for gas? The $30, not having to drive when I didn't want to, savings on gas and wear & tear on my car, and being on time to work would all be factors in making me want to continue getting the ride.

For me, having a person make sure I'm on time to work would be more important than having to wait around afterwards.
Is there a comfortable place you can wait and do something enjoyable (read, write, knit?)

True, true.
That's why it's not an easy decision.
It's kind of hard to find a comfortable place when my shift is over. It is after dark, and even in nice weather, campus is not a good place to hang out after dark. If I stay in the library, I tend to be approached by students who recognize me as a library staff member. I suppose I could go into the (locked) staff room and read. Usually I just stay at my desk and use my laptop, but let the person on the shift after me handle the desk.
