View Full Version : A simple living Rockefeller
I know that some have the reaction of "sure if she gets tired of simple living she can fall back on her billions" but I really enjoy these stories about people who have everything they want from a material perspective and find themselves much happier with far less.

I enjoyed the CBS Sunday Morning piece on Eileen Rockefeller but when asked how much money she had and she responded she had no idea, I thought that I cannot even fathom how to NOT know how much money I have. I am sure that if I had that sort of wealth I could be happy with much, much less knowing that I had an unknowable amount of wealth to fall back on if/when needed.

I love how she homeschooled her children as though it were the 1840s - the time her house was built.

Anyone who invests in stocks in retirement mutual funds for the long run or something probably doesn't know how much money they "have" (none of it real until it's realized) much of the time, some vague approximation sure. Yea sure one could not worry at all about money if they had that kind of wealth, and the middle class accumulates wealth for security for which it actually does buy some - but so much in the world is still insecure especially for anyone that's only middle class (much more than is usualy realized IMO). In short: it's still about mentaility as much as anything.
