View Full Version : Have you turned on the heat yet?

Every year my dw and I try to hold out turning on the heat until our birthdays which are in mid October (same day).

We still have several weeks to go and we just about broke down Sunday and turned on the heat! It was nippy! Weather has been cool and rainy here in the Pacific Northwest. My theory is you can't dress like it is August and not expect to be cold in mid September!

How about you - has the heat been turned on at your house?!

Good Lord, no way! I'm in NE IL and I usually make it to sometime in Dec before turning heat on.

Yes, we have. My husband had circulation problems, so I have to defer to his needs.

heat? HEAT??

Highs of 89 and 90 all week and the a-c is working hard.

no, was happy for a few days I finally didn't need to use A/C or heat (been using A/C of course). It wasn't a hot summer overall, just late Aug and early Sept - HOT.

Not yet. It's a bit cooler than normal here--it got down to 45 degrees last night outdoors. Inside stayed a balmy 58. The sun manages to heat the house up to about 63-65 during the day.

I try to hold out with the heat until October 15. Some years I can make it to November 1.

I made the mistake of wearing a 3/4 length sleeve today and I'm sweatin'. Hoping to get into mid-Oct before I need the heat but it always seems that when it turns chilly it's a damp chilly which makes me colder.

In WA State here too, Gregg, and last night I turned on a space heater while in my sewing room. It gets pretty chilly in there (basement). And I am very close to putting the one winter blanket we use on the bed. I can always throw it off. Last night was quite cold, and we do leave a window cracked in there.

I usually make it well into December or January, so no heat yet. With as little as I use the furnace, it seems wasteful to replace the filter every winter, but I do it anyway. My preference is to be cold when I sleep, so winter cannot come soon enough.

I tried using an infrared, quartz heater last year, but it used too much energy, so I am going back to the little heater to warm the bathroom at shower time and socks, fleece pants and my robe. I hate those huge winter heating bills. Factor out the monthly user fee and my bill can stay right around $30.00 to $70.00 per month, year round.

No, in fact, I just turned the a/c back on. We had a bit of cooling over the weekend but it is back 90+ degrees outside now. How I look forward to turning the a/c off and opening the windows!!:(

Not yet. So far "local heat" (booties, electric mattress pad, etc.) are doing the job. Though I notice DW is closing the bedroom window when she thinks I won't notice and I'm opening the bedroom window when I think she won't notice. :D

Had opened the porch windows night before last - cold in the dining room this AM - grabbed a polar fleece jacket until I was warm. Had to use the AC in the car this afternoon - the fan is on in the living room now. Supposed to be in the low 80s the next day or two.

When I lived in Chicago, my goal was not to wear down coats pre-Thanksgiving. In MN now, I try to stick to the same plan - but thank goodness for layers!

Funny you should ask---started having that discussion with DH this week. He thinks we will need to do so soon, and I say we can hold out longer. Once we do start using the furnace again, I always keep the heat down during the day, while I'm working at home and he's away at work, and then turn it up (a little) just before he's due to arrive home.

Our oil company asks us every year to try our furnace before it gets really cold, so that they don't get a ton of urgent no heat calls once we get our first significant cold spell. So we tried this morning, because it was pretty chilly. No heat. So that's a drag, but I'm glad we took their advice and didn't wait until later in the season to find this out. Will be placing a service call today.

Heh, no--here in Austin we had a high of 96F today. There were a couple of cooler days over the weekend--I got to open windows for the first time in months! Yay fresh air!--but now it's beastly hot again and we're back to the AC.

Oh, I was trying so hard to make it at least till early October but broke down the other day. After a night sleeping in long johns, flannel pj's and a big sweater under our two blankets, I thought it was time. :) If I didn't work at home, maybe I could tough it out--though probably not since all three of our pets are elderly.

I'm going to admit that I thought about turning on the heat yesterday. It was cloudy, so no sun to help heat the house and it stayed at about 61 degrees all day.

That's the temperature I normally heat the house to. Just haven't aclimitized to fall weather yet, just as at the beginning of the summer, 85 degrees seemed oven-like, but by August I was tolerating it well. Have to get used to the new temps. The fact that the temperature seems to jump from the 80s one week to 60s the next is not helping.

In the end, I put on another layer of clothing and made hot tea and dragged out the down throw. And did a few rounds of jumping jacks to warm up a bit.

Cold here. Wrapping up in a fleece blanket under the summer duvet, so yesterday we got out the BIG duvet (winter is here) and the heat is on not only in the office where I see clients but also in the rest of the house. I hate to be cold and when I have piled on all I can wear and still walk, and then I am STILL cold, I turn up the heat. I am grateful to be able to do that.

Course, we are in Canada....fall is really fall here. Cold and wet so the dampness seems to seep into your bones. By January it will be actually COLD, though, and a few days of near freezing temps would be considered balmy and unseasonal. Funny how some things are always relative.

62 degrees in our house this a.m. I think my wife will cave first! Sometimes she cheats and goes and turns on the ovan and stands in front of that!

LOTS of rain for this weekend. They are predicting 3 inches here in the Valley. We are more use to the constant drizzle rather than the down pours that some of you get!

Central Jersey here. No heat on. The dog kicked me out of my bed the other night and so I went down to sleep on the couch and I noticed how quiet the house was with no HVAC running for a change.

Heavens no! We just entered the warm time of year! Tomorrow I'll be spending a few hours in shorts/t-shirt out on the deck reading a book.

SO uses a space heater in the bathroom for an hour or so every morning all year long, which seems totally unnecessary to me, but since he pays the electric bill and it's only $45ish/month I don't nag about it too much...

We won't use the central heat until January some time, and then only when we have several cloudy days in a row. We have great south facing windows so in the winter we get plenty of heat just from solar gain every day. Admittedly we live in San Francisco, so the average temperature only fluctuates about 10 degrees from summer to winter. I miss the hot weather of NYC summers, but I have to admit that I do also like the fact that we can leave the windows open pretty much all year long except for rainy winter days.

Wow so many of you are still experiencing nice weather. We usually get a longer dry fall - with lots of sunshine...they say the sun is to return on Thursday. The heat is on.

9-29-13, 9:57pm
The furnace tried to come on the other day so I shut it off at the burner. I usually do that in the spring but it seems I forgot this year. We're in west central Ohio and we've had a few chilly days, down to 38 one night- but so far we've not even shut all the windows yet. I'm hoping to make it a bit longer. I love fall and chilly weather, except for the heating bill! Really it's been quite warm for this time of year.

Our furnace is going on this afternoon. It's been 63 degrees in the house all day, which is fine for me if I'm moving around (and enjoying soup for lunch). But to keep the peace, I'll switch on the heat before DW gets home from work. The local heat in the bathroom and the electric fireplace downstairs have staved off the moment; we're not anywhere near likely to get above the 50s for highs for the next 7-8 months or so.

My HRV (Heat Recovery Vent?) has died so the air-tight house is dripping with high humidity outside as well. I finally turned the heat pump on just to dry out the house. Fortunately, the outside temp is colder than the inside so the house is just comfortable not hot.

How do I do it? I helps that I'm naturally hot pretty much all the time. When it gets really cold, I do layer. Yoga pants on bottom over Cuddle duds long johns, cotton ragg socks on feet (wool makes me ITCH). On top, ls t-shirt over ss t-shirt with an old cardigan or maybe a fleece pullover on top. Don't wear a hat. Tried it. Makes me nuts.

How much of a "hot bod" :moon: do I have? A few years back the lock box on the door at church with the key to get in was frozen from water dripping from the roof. No one could get it undone (only pastor has a key he keeps). 10 of us are outside waiting to get in for choir practice. I opened my coat, put stomach touching lock box, wrapped my coat closed around it and waited for a few minutes.

I melted it! It's still joked about!:laff:

I also get congested if it gets too hot, so colder is better for sleeping. Having a $30 gas bill (heat/hot water) is wonderful!

LOL!!! That is too funny that you melted the lock box!!! Yes, I could see not living that one down! You are blessed to always be warm. I am always cold and sleep with my faux down comfortor even in the summer. I need some new PJs and will have to set aside a layering set. I do use mittens on my hands when it gets bad. Do use fleece sheets but even in the summer! LOL...

Your bill is amazing. That is so great that you can keep it so low!!! I would love to have such a low bill...chris

No, I'm doing well, thank you climate change and California. Unless you want to count that I've turned on the bathroom heater, that thing where the coils slowly grow red after you flip the switch, from a certain vintage of building. Plus I've switched 1 light bulb from a LED to an old fashioned because I actually want the extra heat generated. Last months gas bill was $18 of taking warm baths and serious cooking (like 1 recipe that simmers for 2 hours - a good recipe for a slight chill).

It is 51F outside, 59F inside. Still another 7 degrees before the heat goes on. I am experimenting tomorrow with that shrink plastic sheeting on one of the ginormous windows here, which should really help keep it cozy.

The fireplace was bricked up just before I moved in last year and there seems to be a draft coming from that area once in a while. I am thinking to duct tape (some of the cute stuff) a piece of heavier plastic over it. Has anyone fixed this fireplace kind of problem?

I think it was close to 90 at the beach yesterday and expected to in the mid 80's all week long. Ugh. After spending much of the fall in NorCal coastal area I am dying. Want to go somewhere cool enough to actually need to turn on the heat instead of the a/c. Of course when I was up north last week it was 42 in the morning and I was out hiking in my shorts and tee shirt. Nearly froze to death until it warmed up to around 70 - my kind of weather, even loved the dense fog - but boy was I complaining about being cold then. You know, I think it's time I took the window air conditioners out of the windows.

Here in New Hampshire, it's been getting chilly, but not turn on the heat chilly. It got up to 55 degrees today, but the sun helped the house heat up to 65. It's been getting down to the low 40s/high 30s at night, but the bedrooms are staying around 58. But it's a mad dash every morning to get the blinds up before work and a mad dash every evening when I get home to put them all down again.

We do have the down blankets out and are wearing sweaters around the house. I'm prepared to go heatless until November 1, but my sister, who stays here three days a week, might have other thoughts. I'm going to try to get her to use my space heater a bit this year--she kept turning the heat up before she went to bed, and my bedroom was way too hot all winter long.

I'll pull it this weekend. We had snow covering everything this morning - it looked so pretty but a few miles south there was nothing. Tuesday was so cold here and I did not make it to my December goal date. Alas. I turned on the beast in the basement and set the thermostat to 60F. It is so much better and my new goal for next fall/winter is to turn on the heat whenever I want to feel more comfortable.

Waiting as long as possible was an interesting exercise in my commitment to being a good steward of my resources, as well as planetary ones, and I enjoyed it, but I realized this week that suffering in the cold is simply...and frugally...not in my best interest. This is a highly personal choice, and I am still looking forward to how others manage to go as long as possible. It is inspiring in so many ways.

Hardly anything more important that proper sleep. Well, maybe chocolate.

not wimpy in the least. You know, I am thinking that to ignore what I and my body and feelings need is silly. I like challenging myself, but suffering to make a point was just, well, silly. I still need to wear a sweater and my fleecy pants, but I do not have to wear two pair of socks, gloves or a hat in order to feel comfortable after dark.

I started weatherproofing last night and will noodle around with what I bought yesterday. If it warms up enough, I might be able to lower the thermostat setting to 58F and still be comfortable.

No one should be suffering from the cold. For me, it's a game. Last year, with the October blizzard, the heat went on a couple of days before November 1.

Suffering is what my dad used to make us do. He'd light a big fire in the living room, where the thermostat was and set the thermostat low enough that the heat wouldn't turn on until the fire died. The living room was warm, about 60; the rest of the house was COLD. My attic bedroom was probably about 40 degrees. I used to have to change into my pajamas in my sister's room, which was warmer, probably about 50 degrees.

The forecast for tonight is 25 degrees. I've just turned the heat on. Saving money on oil is not worth the risk of frozen pipes in a 110 year old house.

I'm in NE IL. It's been in the low-mid 40s all week, with lows around freezing, maybe a bit colder. I put my down comforter (in a flannel cover) on my bed maybe two weeks ago. Underneath is a heavy cotton blanket, besides my sheets. The temp in my apartment has *finally* dropped below 70. It's about 66 or so.

At home I wear yoga pants with thin thermals underneath (Cuddle duds Warm Essentials active from Target), a ls t-shirt, and an old cotton cardigan. Thin socks on my feet. It will have to get much colder and stay that way for me to break out one of my fleece tops.

Or turn the heat on. It's a game with me, but the low, low gas bill (which also covers my hot water) is also a plus. My coworkers don't get it. ;)

We are having an Indian Summer here, so we caught a break. The first month of true cold is very hard. It doesn't get better but you get used to it and can tolerate it better. I wear sleeveless mittens and hats now. I think that's a "getting older" thing, as I didn't use to. Winters in Western Oregon can be very damp, which is a different kind of cold. It really gets into your bones.

We went to China and my purchase was queen size comforter made with layered silk fibers. It has 5 pounds of fiber and is way too warm until the house is "need slippers" cold.

They used a space bag type packing bag and sucked the air out to enable us to get it in the suitcase.

Well I grew up in California and easily cold and with central heating. It was never up to me but some other family members bodies ran really cold as well so the heater was often on. I remember so many mornings being woken up for school as a kid when the first thing I would do on waking is sit by the heater for a few minutes to wake up and get warm sometimes with a blanket. The heater was not generally left on at night but we turned it on on cold mornings. I remember being scrunched up in a little ball (near fetal position) to stay warm in bed - so many nights as a kid, I was scrunched up conserving warmth. That's when I resorted to heat again this year, when I was scrunching my self up in a little ball again and still cold. I remember hot water bottles and those were great :) - so that's a real option. But cold tolerance, no way, I don't think so.

So too cold and too hot (and I can push my heat tolerance further than my cold! so I do get annoyed people's air conditioners are on when it's not even hot) are experienced as physical pain and that's why people have trouble tolerating them and think: frugality: why not just cancel cable or the smart phone, or lattes or buying fancy cheese or whatever your vice is and only after you've given up all that nonsense, if you still need or want more frugality then temperature control. Because your body is not going to scream for those luxuries at the point of pain (they're fun but that's all), but it might scream for temperature control at the point of urgency and pain. Oh I do ocassional short term fasting. So clearly that's pushing the body some into minor physical pain. But maybe I'm both convinced it's more beneficial and it's actually less painful for me to be somewhat hungry (20-24 hours without food say) than to be consistently too cold! Of course if I was starving to death I wouldn't think so, but I"m not. :)

Oh most advice for keeping apartments cold or warm without using power don't work. I've more tried the keep apartments cool in summer advice than the hot in winter advice. Useless. The only thing that does work besides A/C is fans. Fans work although at a certain temp you'll probably still turn to the A/C. I honestly don't think people who haven't really spent much of their lives in apartments even understand them at all. They are often very drafty and near totally uninsulated. You can't compare them to living in a house.

Miss Cellane

Yes, apartments are very different. In the winter, that's sometimes nice. You have the insulation of having other units all around you, except on your one outside wall. And sometimes the people downstairs from you have their heat way up, and you get some of the benefit of that as the heat rises. So you don't have to turn your heat up as much.

But in the summer, apartments don't seem to be able to cool off as well as houses. With little or no cross-ventilation, it is much, much harder to get the cool night air into the place. So it just gets hotter and hotter and hotter.

I can take cold better than I can take heat. So having the apartment at 55 or 60 isn't a problem for me. Having it at 85 degrees with 95 per cent humidity--that's painful. So I have a window A/C to allow me to have one cool room where I can actually function during heat waves.

People have stuff to do. If you are so cold that you are wrapped in layers of blankets, it's hard to cook and clean and crochet and lots of other stuff. If you are so hot that you have to position yourself carefully in front of a single fan, it's also hard to get anything done.

Tradd, I read her blog once in a while, but missed that one. I was feeling really wimpy and unworthy of fussing over being too cold at 52F, when their indoor temperature was 15, until I realized that she was talking/writing in Celsius.

I remember frosty windows in the morning and rushing like crazy to get out of my jammies and into my clothes, hoping that there would be oatmeal for breakfast.

Not yet, it has just started to get chilly here (southern US). But, temps are dipping down to the high 20s F tonight AND we are having company. DH and I could probably bear one cold night with lots of blankets but I won't do that to my house guests, lol. So, tonight the heat comes on!

This week highs are in the 80s, so apparently the heat coming on was a false alarm. I hate cold weather, so I am glad to have a warm week!

The north wind blew in last night!
Had the heat on for twenty minutes or so, and took a hot pad to bed to keep my feet warm.

For some reason I got it in my head that I would try to make it to November 1st without turning on the oil heat, but its 57 degrees inside and I'm not sure I'll make it. Amazingly, kids are not cold at all, even in shorts and short sleeves! I have determined that it would not be cheating to use my little electric space heater in the morning for a few minutes. Heat is our fourth or fifth biggest expense (after healthcare costs, mortgage, property taxes (and food ?)), so I'm determined to cut back this year; the late start and having the heater cleaned/maintained last week are the first steps in the plan.

Still set at 68....and sometimes I leave the windows and doors open. I remember to close them when the heat kicks on after sunset.

No heat yet but I have taken the heating pad to bed. Might need to add the comforter soon.

It's been on for a couple of weeks, though turned down as we've had some warmer days.
Now it is in the 40s (20s overnight) and we had a hard frost, so it'll be on from now on, I am sure.

I've only used a space heater up 'til now, but I can foresee colder days ahead.

In Tucson, nope! But I have run the swamp cooler fan without the pump to get some of that nice warm mid morning air into the house after a chilly night. I don't count that.

Yes, because I'm a great big cold baby. I can live without A.C. in the summer until it starts getting unbearable, but I freeze easy.

I have kept the thermostat at 62F, and am very comfortable. I have yet to see the difference this will make on my utility bill, but I just cannot have it as cold as it was last winter season.

I'd not yet turned the heat on - until this evening. It's been in the low 20s all day with a good breeze. Can't believe it was 65 a week ago! Tonight it's going down to around 5-10. I had to turn the heat on a bit.

We turned ours on this morning at 45 degrees. I feel like such a wimp after reading Tradd's post...

Today, after a storm left 2.5 inches of rain here in Phoenix the last few days, it actually felt chilly and borderline cold. The heat went on today for the first time since the end of February. I love this time of year here!

Ours has been on for many days. If it's below 30 F outside this house is cold for us two . Envious of Phoenix.

When the temp here in the NW dropped into the twenties, we just couldn't get warm. Only heating necessary rooms. The unheated ones are frigid.

Tiam, Same here in the Willamette Valley. We've had the baseboard heaters in our apartment turned off at the circuit breaker for years. The one exception in the bathroom. Wet hair and a cold room-eek!

Broke down and turned it on tonight. It is so cold here, about 18 degrees with strong winds. I'm on a very tight budget and try to keep from turning on the heat as long as possible, but when it's this cold it makes my body hurt, and I fear the pipes could freeze as well.
