View Full Version : Funny zucchini tales
Even though I only planted two plants this year, we're still overrun with zucchini.
My husband was shipping a gift to my brother today, and on a whim stuck a zucchini in the box. (my brother knows of my gardening mania)
For some reason I found that really funny. I have also in years past made zucchini cars, carved them for Halloween, and left them on neighbors' porches. Of course, they know who the gardener is in the neighborhood, and like that Stephen King story about demons, sometimes they come back LOL
Have you ever gotten rid of an overabundance of a garden item in a funny way?
Not me, but I am already in love with the beginning of Random Acts of Zucchini. Sounds like the start of a world-wide movement.

Funny veggie story:
A coworker's son is in love with veggies and fruit. He takes whole tomatoes and eats them like you would eat an apple.
Anyway, this thread is about getting rid of produce. Another coworker gives her extra to the mother of the tomato-lover.
I like the idea of "anonymous" veggies. :)

We've had zucchini comedy in our house. Our first cat LOVED zucchini. He was wild for it. He was only as wide as a zucchini himself, and when he stuffed himself with it he would widen out, bloated with zucchini stomach. He always looked pregnant after eating it.
It was funny because he wasn't like that with any other food, zucchini was his drug.
My husband sometimes is pretty wacky, and i frequently object to the wackiness, but lately he's been putting 3-4 beautiful Jersey tomatoes in a paper lunch bag and leaving them "anonymously" on our neighbors' porches, which I find totally endearing.
(We were able to buy a big box of tomatoes for $15 from our CSA supplier and we'll never eat them all, so he's sharing the wealth)
A friend reminded me today that three years ago I had so many collard green plants to go see all at once that I had a huge bucket of collard seeds, and we made "seed balls" with mud and straw, and slung them all over my then-neighborhood. It was beautiful and funny to walk around the next spring and see collard greens sprouting in ditches, roadsides, and vacant lots all over.

I forgot that each fall we drop pumpkins on people in the neighborhood. DH raises pumpkins to excess and so he goes around at night and puts them on the doorsteps of our friends.
Tonight I'll be adding two small pumpkins to the existing group on the steps of new neighbors across the street. It will look like their pumpkins had babies.

That is so sweet IL, I would feel so touched if someone put a pumpkin on my front porch!

That is totally sweet of you husband, Catherine. I love hearing about these RAOK!
Great stories! I haven't come up with a funny way to get rid of produce-the sneak carved zucchini are great! I suppose maybe this sort of counts: I gave someone at work a big baggie of oregano, which esp in CO might be mistaken for another....herb. But since it was work I think I wrote "OREGANO" on it with a sharpie just so there was no confusion. Or disappointment ;)

DH used to give lots of zuchiini to our freind Jeff. Jeff would bake several loaves of zucchini bread and give one back to DH. Jeff moved to California a couple of years ago. Another friend was flying out to see Jeff and DH stuffed zucchini in that friend's suitcase. When the flying friend returned he had a loaf of zucchini bread for DH.
