... of working for a theatre. Comps! We went to opening last night at ACT theatre, where I work, & saw Sugar Daddies, directed by the British playwright Alan Ayckbourn. Tonight we saw Carrie: The Musical, at a sister theatre. It was awesome! Sunday we're going to see broke-ology at community theatre. So much fun!!

Yay! So glad you found a job that comes with all kinds of benefits -- you sound very happy and I hope it works out well for you and ACT for the long term :)

I like dramatic plays (hate musicals) and appreciate all of those struggling companies out there that work to bring the theatrical experience here. Each year I survey the season's offerings and mark my calendar for the ones that interest me. I don't go to many but usually hit 2 -3 a year.

We have the largest professional African American repertory theater group in St. Louis and the director lives down the street from me. I love Black Rep productions because they have a great venue, an old church, and it's a 7 minute drive for me and it's free parking on the street. Also, they are shear pros. The "White" rep is out in an old suburb on a college campus and their offerings are stale and it's just a fairly boring experience, city productions are more interesting.

iris lilies, as you know my son was in a movie that was shot in your home town... well he got his acting start at an African American theatre company! They were a well-reputed group, but they had done their productions in a fire trap, so they raised money and built a beautiful new theatre in town. They were casting for their premiere play in the new space, and my DH said he was bringing my son to try out. Well my son was about 6, and as tow-headed, anglo-saxon as you would ever see, and I said to DH, "What are you wasting your time for?? He's not going to get a part!" But as it turns out, he was cast as the "token white" and an agent was in the audience and she approached us afterwards and then he wound up acting at Lincoln Center, he did a few commercials and a couple of small independent films, and a somewhat recurring (4 episodes) on The Sopranos.

So there's a warm place in my heart for African American theatre as well!

But theatre in general rocks, and I don't know HOW you don't love musicals! I think I know all the lyrics to every musical made in the 50s, 60s and 70s. I've slowed down a little, but I still really enjoyed Les Miz for sure, and some of the lesser ones like Spamalot, Rent, etc.

Cool! And wait, he was on Sopranos!!!???

I'd probably like SPamalot. I do like Chorus Line and Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

Yes, he played one of A.J.'s friends.

And one last name-drop and then I'll shut up--speaking of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, my son was in a play in NY with John Cameron Mitchell at The Atlantic Theatre Company. Great guy--very, very nice.
