Something my cousin and I have been wanting to do for a long time - have the pool in the back of our house (we have never used it anyway, and it's annoying because the few times it does rain here the pool needs to be pumped out) filled with dirt. I have planted dwarf lime trees there so far and in January will be hopefully planting a dwarf peach tree and a dwarf apricot tree. And this weekend I'm planting kale, broccoli, and peppers.

I'm really looking forward to eating food that I have grown myself! If there's a way to post pics here I will be glad to do so once the veggies start growing.

When I read your title, growing food there was my first thought, mostly because any supportive stuff you do to keep the soil healthy will not leach away and get burned up in the magma. :~)

When Amish families in this area buy homes with swimming pools they fill them with dirt and plant gardens. Good use of an otherwise waste of space for them.
