View Full Version : The better garlic peeler
I know I said that banging the 2 stainless steel bowls together were good for peeling garlic, but I've changed my mind. Actually, I've had this thing in my kitchen drawer for a long time, but never really used it. Today I used it and WOW! .......it totally takes off the skins with just a few rolls. I know hitting the garlic with a big knife works, but I usually get the skins stuck on me, or all over the place. This is a great tool if you use alot of garlic. It might even work if you have one of those rubber-ish round things to open lids. You could try rolling the garlic up in that and rolling it around. But this garlic peeler is super!

I started using the bottom of a coffee mug a couple of years ago, works great, no extra gadget needed, easy to clean.
Grab mug by handle, smash garlic.
If it has a little bit of a rim on the bottom, all the better, then the garlic is better retained from squirting sideways when you BAM down on it.
I just use the knife I'll be chopping it up with. Crush a clove a little under the flat of the blade and then pick it up by the "tail" and rub it lightly in the palm of the other hand - the skin will come right off.

Cut the root ends off first (if you don't have a gadget). then crush. If the skin is still on make a vertical cut. This works well if you are only trying to peel garlic. I know lots of folks buy the bottled crushed garlic but I think fresh is better.
I think fresh is better, but I am lazy :~)
I used it tonight and am just amazed at how easy the skins all came off. Sometimes I use garlic powder, but for the most part, we prefer the fresh garlic. I had to quit eating garlic so much a couple months ago. I struggled with a horrible taste in my mouth all the time. I guessed it was the garlic, and sure enough........when I quit eating it, the bad taste went away. But I still love it.........
