View Full Version : November Decluttering or 100 items

Hey all,

Thought I'd see what happened if I combined these two threads. Some months we have one and not the other, some months we have both. I will venture to guess that for most of us it's about lightening our loads, but some people are about the challenge of the 100 items and others just want to celebrate what they are able to do.

I think I will count again myself, you wouldn't have to though.

Just walked two packages of soap and one package of dog food up to a local church for the food shelf collection.

Nov 02, I am back in on this one for sure
I just took another 20 items to an on line consignment but, I can't count them until they sell....because I will get them back at some time
so here's hoping they sell and I get money....lol
Yesterday I went through some drawers to get a few things to donate to the Seniors Home Auxiliary for a White Elephant table next week.
--pins, earrings, photo books, candles........ 14 items
Will post today's later
Thanks for starting this....

I just took a car full of kitchen gear, baskets, rugs, and other miscellany to Value Village--a huge haul. The purge continues.

Combined is great Kelli, thanks for doing that.
Completely lost the de-clutter steam in October.
Will wait till next weekend is over (school play and board/staff dinner that I'm hosting) before I work on finding more to move along.

I have too many challenges, but also too much clutter, so I'm going to try this. Today: 1 box of stuff to goodwill (in my car ready to drop off). I'm only counting it as one item because - half of it is my daughter's, and the other half is rejects from a box of linens I bought at auction last week.

I'd love to say I didn't think I could find another 100 items to declutter, but I know that's not true. So I'm in on this one, too.

I know we have a thrift-store box already started; I'll add some more to it and start counting.

early, I also have hard time knowing if I should count things that are "passing through," so to speak . . . often, items my dearest parents think we will want that we just give away :( But the good thing is not to let them linger, so well done!

Yeah, glad we will all have lots of company this month! It's really an ongoing battle, isn't . . . now we're trying to clean some things out in order to make room for baby stuff! Uffda! :)

Oh, I should point out a major decluttering score - DH has finally decided it is time for the Nordic Track to go! It's been used maybe three times in the seven years I've known him - all by me, and I obviously didn't love it or I would have used it more. WOO!! It's not gone yet, but once he decides, it's as good as done, really.

#5 - small skillet
#6 - pitcher I bought because I needed one until all my stuff got here. If I decided I still needed it, I think I paid $1 for it, and it is causing me too much stress trying to decided whether to just 'put it away until next time'. Same with the dishes I bought. I like them. I also like the ones I already had that are now here. sigh. I am bound and determined to fit into this mobile home though, so some things will just have to go.
#7, 8 - two more fridge magnets for businesses I don't use anymore.

#2 to #10 - 8 placemats to GW
#11 - pottery lid, into sale box

I can finally participate in this thread! I was finally able to make the thrift store run and drop off donations - kitchen stuff, big bag of clothing, cassette tapes, etc. etc. Count from my detailed list for taxes reflects 96 items... only 4 more needed for the month!!! LOL. Needless to say, I'm hoping to do better than that. While in this productive mode, I'm hoping to get much more decluttered in time for the holidays.

Continued luck to everyone else!

Another 62 books sold at the used book store for $11. DH bought 2 used books, but still a net outflow of clutter and a little profit remaining. We took a bag of small kids toys, a ball and three tops to Goodwill.

67 items so far.

Over the past few days:

- six empty pill bottles that someone on freemarket wanted but never bothered to pick up
- expired battery from an uninterruptible power supply
- two blank "pocket" books (for reminders, etc.)
- three books which were floating through the house to give to others -- just whom we no longer remember
- pencil holder
- music CD that won't read in any CD player in the house
- spare bypass pruner

So far, 15 items.

Am well over the 100 items for the month and boy it feels good. Had a stack of "garage sale" crap in the garage from decluttering, but didn't want to have the sale. Not worth the work for the minimal money I would have made. Well, acquaintance auctioneer said he'd take the stuff for his latest auction, delivered it to him and it's gone! And Saturday I have a date to take my sister to the "city" for her birthday treat and will drop off my two giant trash bags of clothing at Goodwill and.....200+ items decluttered in one week. Feels good!

Now it is confession time Library yard sale on Sunday $3.00 a bag and I bought 3 = 12 books and 50 magazines.
I know this puts me way behind, but I am much better these days about just reading the books and passing them
on and reading the magazines and tearing out an interesting article or two and then recycling or passing them on.
Okay this is my story and I am sticking to it.

Just a side thought about "stuff" - after reading for many years about the idea of toy rotation for kids, I finally had a lightbulb go off when my little dog got sooooooooo excited upon rediscovering an old toy that had been left in the yard for some months, laundered, and put back on the toy scene. I realized I could rotate his toys (which, comically enough, have grown as a collection even though we have not bought him any in months . . . he keeps finding toys, mainly balls . . . ) and he'd be so happy about it! So I gathered all the toys I could find in the yard before the leaves fell, and washed them up (the toys and balls we have wash up really well in the washing machine), and put all of them in a cupboard except for one, and he is obsessively happy about having her back right now. :)

Luckily he doesn't destroy his toys so we can do this. I just think it's funny that it took me so long to realize this. :)

He posed so patiently for this photo. It's like he knew exactly what to do. He's such a stitch.

He's adorable.

The Goodwill sacks got delivered and out of the house today. It feels so good! And I've had 2 old-style TVs I've been jonesing to get out of the house (bedroom TVs that we don't even have cable hookups to anymore), but you can't even give them away anymore, nobody wants them.....and my sister needs one! In fact she said our brother has promised her one after Christmas when they are replacing one of their bedroom TVs, and I'm going "oh no no no no! You don't want to wait till after Christmas when I can get you one tomorrow!" And she agreed, she'd like one now and will be pleased to take one of ours off my hands (she obviously has a converter box). Hurray! Delivering it to her tomorrow. November is looking like a serendipitous de-cluttering month for me.....

Ooh, score on the TV! For the other one, if it still hangs around, Best Buy now takes TVs up to 32" for free recycling. You used to have to do some monkey business with paying $10 and in exchange they would give you a $10 gift card but now it's just out-and-out free.

Added:
- 4 3-ring binders
- 26 books (went through "my" bookcase and determined that the >30-year-old German dictionary wasn't going to be of much help. I also parted with a copy of YMOYL. I think I'm pretty much there myself; better to pass it on to someone else who can decide to get his/her life back [there's probably a newer edition besides]. And a bunch of other books I don't look at and would just as soon borrow from the library if I ever get the jones to do so)
- 3 small pieces of computer equipment
- 3 empty CD cases (I'm not generating any more burned CDsand if the thrift store needs cases for CDs...)
- a set of thank-you notes with a theme no longer applicable to me
- 18 pens, pencils, and highlighters. I can't remember the last time I highlighted anything on a piece of paper.
- old battery to a mobile phone that's not here anymore

New total: 71 items. I'm still thinking if I want to count 18 writing implements separately, though.

[EDIT]Nah, not doing it. Counting it as one bunch of writing implements. 54 items. I've got plenty of time to find other things. :)

Thank you for the suggestion fidgie! Of course we're 1.25 hours from the nearest Best Buy, but if I don't find someone to take the other one off my hands this winter.....it would be worth the hassle, on one of our trips to the city.

Love the dog toy rotation idea! In Jesse's case, he doesn't play with some of his toys, so I'm going to toss the ratty stuff, wash the rest, vacuum the toy basket and then find a better location for it than in the dining room.

We had a great decluttering day here!

My SO and I cleaned out our storage shed, and I took loads of stuff to both the kids' consignment shop and the thrift store.

In the end, the kids' consignment store took 13 items, and the thrift store got 39, so I am now at 52 for the month.

I am also packing up a box of my daughter's clothes for her cousin, but I won't count those until I've mailed the box off.

Oh, actually, just threw out a pair of my daughter's pajamas which had holes in them and were too small. Now at 53.

Yay! Thanks for the inspiration, Everybody!

I soaked red beans last night that weren't expired for cooking in the crock pot today. I am going to try to use up all the odds and ends in the other storage spots before they expire as well. So today's menu will be seaweed, red bean, canned octopus, barley and mung bean casserole. I am sure the family will be thrilled. :)

This one took a while because it was kind of a biggie. I ripped my cassettes onto my computer for future listening. Most of what remained was recordings of live radio shows which were one-time events and which won't likely be repeated. Time capsules, and they were fun to listen to again as I digitized them. I hadn't heard some of them in, probably, decades.

Doing this, however, lets me pass on to some thrift-store buyer 28 cassettes and the cassette decks (two of them, from thrift stores, in case one died in the process) and the cables which they use. I gain some shelf space by the stereo. And I get to check off something that's been on my to-do list for years.

Current total: 86 items (yeah, I'm counting each cassette 'cuz it took time to set up the ripping process)

Getting there!! I am going to go spend some time in the basement right now. It is driving me bonkers. My hubby started demo-ing before removing all the items, so everything is covered in dust. Then we had an egress window installed this week and I failed to realize a wet saw would be involved, and all the dusty sh*t got wet with cement water. Man, you guys make me tired just READING about your accomplishments, lol.

Fidgie, bummer about the textile recycle spot. Good on you for having the strength to dump them. I really have problems with that. I try really hard to connect my cast-offs with an end user and avoid trashing stuff, I even avoid GW etc when I can; they are overstuffed and getting pricey here. So clothing mostly goes to a shelter, housewares etc to a local veteran's org, recycles to various centers, but it takes longer, more effort, and does not always improve my mood, lol. I do trash the trash, but other stuff is hard. I really need to learn when to just LET IT GO. But on the up side, today I finally matched a box of shoe covers with a 501c3 neighborhood association that does Christmas house tours every other year. I'll drop them off tomorrow after work, yay! Those silly things (left here by a BIL, for no apparent reason) have been here for over a year while I tried to find a home for them. See, if I were sane, I'd have dumped them at GW ages ago, and been done with it. But I'm a work in process, lol.

I'm putting these here because they're from yesterday:

an old sweater of mine that had a hole and a stain and a dress-up shoe of my daughter's that lost its frilly decoration - 120 for the month!

I gave away 6 or 7 books last week. I'm feeling the urge to purge my books again. I sold a few collectibles on ebay, probably about 10 things or so. So about 20 things for November. And I feel like I'm forgetting something.
