Could someone tell me what a "health insurance co-op" is?

I have a friend who lives in New York state and says she can get health insurance through their co-op.
She says only 25 states have co-ops.

I would like to know where I can find a list of the states that have co-ops, whatever they are.

Never mind. I found out. My state doesn't take part in it.
