View Full Version : Just a quick workplace etiquette question

My computer at home has taken a nosedive. Part of the perks at work is that we can bring in our personal computers and IT will take a look at them.
The head of IT said to just bring it in. My spouse suggested I ask them what time is a good time to do so.

This was on Thursday, and I did ask the IT guy when would be a good time. I explained that I'm not at work on Fridays, but would be checking my email over the weekend.

Well, it's Monday afternoon and he never told me when to bring it in. I don't want to be a pain in the butt, but I really need the computer fixed.

What's a nice way of handling this? I don't usually bump into him at work, and I don't want to just "drop by" his office.

Thanks!

I'd send an email and say "Will you be around this afternoon? I could come by at 3:00." and hope for the best.

Well, I don't have the computer with me. I'm not going to bring it in and drop by till I have a firm commitment from him because there's nowhere at work for me to keep it.

How far away is his office? Unless it's a mile or two, I'd stop by and ask in person, introduce myself, say thanks in advance, all that. Just me, though.

Oh, he knows me to see me and talk to me. His office is just downstairs in my building.
I did stop by this afternoon and he wasn't around.
I think I'm just gonna wait till I hear back from him. If I don't by, say, Wednesday, I'll email him again.

I'm not the most patient person...I just want my computer back up and running again.

EDIT: oops...His office is not actually in my building (just looked at the directory). He is IN here a lot, but his office is just around the corner. However, his last email said to bring the computer to the office in my building.

I wonder if I am making too much out of this. Since I don't actually have to see him, but need to drop it off downstairs, maybe I should just plan to do that this week.

I suspect that he didn't see it as a big issue as he may be doing this for a number of people. Once he helps the first time, you will know the ropes and will be much more comfortable about when and how to talk to him.
Don't over think the situation.

IT is always on the move. Being told to just bring it in, to me, means EXACTLY that. It means it will be put in order (stuff boss demands first, then things that are actually in front of him, then other things). You might get more information for THEM, if you want a more specific reply from them. (what is it doing, so they can tell you what could be, and tell you to bring in the restore disks or whatever might be needed)
