Sounds like the people who "donated" alot of this stuff, didn't really go through it very well first. Maybe they were confusing the Goodwill Store with a trash bin?
Yes, Goodwill should be going through these boxes first, but I can't imagine the amount of junk they get.

I agree with you, it's not exactly the role of Goodwill to go through pockets. Now, I cant imagine how a set of tax returns came in to Goodwill that made them look enticing for the sales floor, so it's likely they were buried in with magazines or books.
The headline and first paragraphs make it look as though Goodwill is purposely selling these documents as personal document and personal information.
I shop a lot a Goodwill stores all over the city and have not found this kind of thing.

I've never seen that kind of thing, either, though I've never shopped at Goodwill's by-the-pound outlets.
I think the folks who didn't vet the stuff they sent to Goodwill should be in focus here. It's not a non-issue, but I don't think Goodwill is the only thing to "fix" here.
I have often taken my reusables to the freight drop off area of a local thrift store equivalent of Goodwill. The volume of stuff these guys get is amazing. There are usually huge bundles of clothing that look like they are unsaleable as individual garments are destined for recycling as rag material. Realistically I can understand how it is impossible to sort through everything.
You can't fix stupid. If someone is dumb enough to donate their tax information and it gets resold in a blind transaction, so be it. They deserve what they get. Let me know if they catch Goodwill actually selling this stuff on Moscow Craigslist. That would be a story.
Yeah, its irritating that the news made it sound like Goodwill was knowingly selling everyone's personal info.
