View Full Version : Someone made counterfeit checks and stole money from DH's business.............
Someone made checks to look like real ones with DH's business info on them, then removed a large sum of money from the business checking account.
They cashed it at a bank that wasn't even in this state. How can this happen?
The fraud department at the bank is investigating, and DH will get his money back, but dang..........how easy is it to do things like this?
How horrible! I'm sorry you have to deal with this, what a PITA! I sure hope you get restitution in a timely manner.

Really easy.
A common thing that people overlook when their house is burglarized, is going through boxes of checks to see if any are missing (used or not).
This happened where I work too. The check was stolen out of the mailbox (not sure if on our end or theirs) and supposedly the image of it sold to bad guys who changed just the name the first time and then the next day two more checks for different amounts and with different check numbers. If you just looked for, say check number 123 for $1000 and it cleared the bank - they were home free. But they got greedy and kept trying.
Afterwards I learnedly this is a significant problem since lots of mail is easily identified as a check from the outside. One of our workarounds is to not mail checks in window envelopes. It means an extra step in printing envelopes to be mailed but worth the security of not being compromised.
Our account was closed and a new one opened but we were frozen for about a week. Not a big deal but definately caused a bit of discomfort. All monies were restored within that time.
Thanks everyone.
DH writes tons of checks all the time.......so its really hard to figure out where it went wrong. Hopefully, the fraud squad will figure it out.
Fortunately, the bank quickly replaced the stolen money.
