Today's leading articles from the local newspaper.

A lobsterman was arrested for stealing lobster traps, including several traps belonging to a dead lobsterman who died recently. He is also charged with not using certain safety devices that prevent whales from being caught in the lines.

The local fire department has repaired the reindeer that were vandalized over the summer, so that they can be used in the Christmas parades in 5 local towns. Four of the reindeer and Santa's sleigh were damaged. The local hospital donated casting material that was used in the restoration.

My city was founded in the 1600s by two families with a land grant from the king. A member of one of the families, now living a couple towns over, died last week. In a country where people move so much and so far, it's interesting to see the old names come up and realize that the descendants of the founders are still very much all around us.

What's the news where you are?

Ha Ha! Funny. My Mom use to live in one of those "Active Seniors Communities" of about 10,000 people and their little news letter had the craziest "police reports". Things like "I went to my apt but someone new was living there and they wouldn't leave" - ended up the lady was at the wrong house. Or the constant "Someone stole my front door mat" Etc...

My city, older than most, is STILL attempting to finish the tram system which replaces the one dismantled in the 1960s!

Caroline Kennedy's arrival as the US Ambassador to Japan.
I wonder if she even knows Japanese? Either way she seems to have been positively rec'd here.

(a) The county crews are all ready for the potential icing forecasted for tonight (first truly cold weather for us this year). The trucks are ready, the crews allocated, and there's plenty of sand and salt. They will be out all night if necessary.
(b) The city commission is giving certain homeowners more time to repair pre-condemned homes, so as not to be condemned. It seems to be a fractious issue, with heated words both pro and con reported at the meeting.
(c) The Boeing jumbo jet that landed at the wrong airport in Wichita.

The fact that the first full day of Hanukkah coincides with Thanksgiving for the first time in 125 years, giving rise to the combined holiday, "Thanksgivukkah."
Savvy entrepreneurs are selling special Thanksgivukkah wrapping paper, dreidels, nail art, greeting cards, T-shirts and aprons at zazzle.com

I almost didn't post because most people here can't grok what it's like in my urban environment, but really, here's what's been happening in my 'nabe:

1) drive by shooter gets a man* walking around our park, gets him in the leg with a gunshot. That was 2 days ago.

2) Today car with 2 females driving stops to ask a neighbor to use his phone because driver chick has an "emergency." Do-gooder neighbor hands them phone and they drive off, with neighbor being dragged by car. He's got broken shoulder. But to make this personal: DH saw the car earlier today and talked to a co-worker who had been approached by chicks-in-car. Fortunately that co-worker was not a trusting do-gooder, he was too damned smart to hand over his phone, he told the chick to get out of the car and he would ask the call for them. Instead they spun a U-turn in the middle of the street. Lying scum.

DH I don't worry about because he would not do anything in this sitch except call 911. That's what one learns after living her for 25 years.

*man turned out to be operating under an alias and this was gang activity. It's not as though they are shooting random citizens.

iris lilies: I gave a lecture to a couple of teenage? boys who came to our urban door yesterday. I did not even let them get out their spiel but told them we called police on people who came up for solicitations, strange requests for jobs, even church ladies, etc. Too many breakins and many of us are workers and not home during the day. Told them to not go door to door (at least here). Don't think they expected what they got.

My 87 year old Dad had two ladies ask to use his farm phone because their car broke down on the hiway in front of his property. He ended up marrying one of them. Strange things happen. At least this one was happy.

" Tears of gratitude flow with flood relief
Businessman Jim Sherwood has had the task this week of making people cry — and laugh, and shout for joy.
Sherwood, who was the impetus behind a fund-raising event Nov. 2 at the Elks Lodge that raised $30,000 for victims of the September flooding, hand-delivered most of the 27 checks early this week....."

It's nice when the headline is GOOD news for a change....

Yes, it is.

The big news today is the Closed Door meeting held between officials of a neighboring town and the state university that has its campus in that town. The university and the town have shared an outdoor swimming pool for 70 years, but the university, which owns the pool, wants to close it and build a new one.

Much consternation about the nature of the Closed Door meeting and tossing around of Freedom of Information Act, but apparently the meeting does not fall under the Act and the proceedings will remain secret.

Local restaurant changed the chicken fried steak special from Thursday to Wednesday. Thursday special is now fried pork sandwich. Someone also went around with a Obama stencil and painted his name on the stop signs. Some are upset about the menu change.

Local public schools are now offering benefits to domestic partners.
Weather is going to be cold this weekend, but no bad weather.

And in really local news, the completely misguided wild turkey that has adopted us keeps pooping on the porch. NOt really sure how to keep him off the porch. I've taken to tossing cracked corn around the side of the house off the patio in an effort to keep him over there. Only marginally successful. >8)

Two things caught my attention recently:
1) The never-ending battle brought on by creationists at the Texas Board of Education against taking a more science-based approach on what to put in public school textbooks. They just don't like the word evolution.
2) City council squashed an idea to allow only "healthy food zones" near schools, ie no new fast food outlets. Although in theory I agree, it seems elitist to tell people that they should be eating what you think they should.
