I understand there's a Dr. Who movie out right now.
I'm a big sci-fi fan, but I never liked the show that much. I'm referring to the Tom Baker era, mostly.
I've got a good friend who loves the post-2005 Dr. Who episodes and dislikes the earlier ones. I have never seen any of the later ones. I don't have TV at home, nor can I stream from the BBC network.
If I go to this movie, will I be totally lost b/c I haven't watched the show? Do you think I'd even like it?

The short answer is YES!
The newer Dr Who series, starring Chris Ecclestone, the David Tennant, then Matt Smith and soon to star one of my favourite Scottish actors,Peter Capaldi have taken the story into new territories!

I tried it and was not lost. I wasn't crazy about it, though.

Hmmm...maybe I'll give it a try. There are times when I wish I had TV (like, when new seasons of "Downton Abbey" come out) but for the most part I don't miss it.
I'm a big Doctor Who fan and I believe it's never too late to get on board the franchise. I'm not aware of a new movie, unless your friend meant the 50th Anniversary special entitled 'The Day of the Doctor', which aired on BBC America on Saturday. As part of a week long celebration on BBC America, there's also a television movie entitled 'An Adventure in Space and Time', which tells the story of the creation of Doctor Who.
My 11 year old grandson discovered the Doctor this past summer and we've had a great time with him watching the newest version of the series, beginning with the 9th Doctor, Christopher Eccleston (although it now turns out that he was actually Doctor #10), on Netflix. He's such a fan, we painted his bathroom door as the Tardis and he bought himself a Fez and a bowtie.

That is so cool, Alan!
I just Googled it, and I believe it's what you said, a 50th anniversary special, being shown in 3D in some theaters.
Somehow I thought it was a feature film.
Somewhere there’s danger, somewhere there’s injustice, somewhere else, the tea’s getting cold. I offer that none of these terrible conditions exist at Alan's house. Well done Grandpa!
You never forget your first Doctor. :D

The "movie" is the tv show that aired Saturday. It is the first of the new season, and isn't movie in length. I rated it average on a Doctor Who site I visit, because it went a different direction then I expected. My second to youngest niece recently got into the show and watched all the way through season 6 on Netflix. I have and loaned her Season 7 to watch before it aired.
The special does have references going back all the way to the first Doctor, in 1963 (subtle) and more obviously to the three Doctors (first multi doctor special). The budget has made the show more in line with the Stargate franchise, or Battlestar Galactica, if you enjoy those. If you can watch Netflix (don't know what your computer is running), you might try it first, otherwise, this time next year, it will be out (the DVD of this "special" is out December 10th and has been pre orderable for some time).
It is my only watch show (grown up from Tom Baker (back tracked to Pertwee) on, through early Collin Baker before it wasn't on locally). Parents record it for me (it's channel is in their package, I am not paying $130 a month for one tv program), then I get the DVD's when on special.

I have watched it since the very first series!
I don't watch much TV, but love DW.
i am looking forward to Peter Capaldi (my secret crush since 'Local Hero' with Burt Lancaster) as the next regenerated Doctor.

I love Dr. Who - my favorite was the Chris Eccelston series. Haven't seen the newer versions yet or that any newer movie was out. Only movie I remember was from the late 1990's.
Cute photos Alan!
